Rape

I've just read the most terrible and upsetting story. A mother was out walking with her young children yesterday afternoon about half four when a man out walking his dog approached her and proceeded to rape her in front of the children! He only ran off when one of the kids began to cry. How horrific not just for the poor woman to suffer this but what psychological damage will it do to her kids.

I hope twisted sick bastard is caught and very slowly tortured

yes my dad told me about this. was it in northern ireland? horrendous attack. for all of that family. makes me so so Angry

Alibobster · 07/03/2011 11:19

Yes it was Ireland. Why do such terrible things happen? Sometimes it make me scared to leave the house when I hear about such evil things. I can't stop thinking about those poor wee children

why does it happen? because the deterrant is nowhere near enough to put people off doing it. because when they do it and get caught, they stand a 96% chance of getting let off with it, because statistically the rape is unlikely to even be reported, because women aren't people they are eitehr useful or useless WRT serving a man's intended purpose.

Chil1234 · 07/03/2011 12:02

Why does it happen? Because a minority of people are criminally minded and have no sense of right and wrong. Sex offenders are often addicted to their particular crime, making them particularly dangerous. Nothing to do with deterrents or detection rates.

This should not result in anyone being scared to leave the house. Obviously, the people in the area where it happened should be on the look-out for what sounds like a very distinctive attacker and lone women should avoid that particular area. But the rest of us should take reasonable, normal safety precautions when out and about and not let a few twisted criminals stop us from going about our business.

i think it might have something to do with deterrants and low rates for reporting of rape chil. Hmm

Chil1234 · 07/03/2011 13:59

Hmm yourself.... This one's been reported and as soon as they find this particular 'white haired man in his fifties, wearing a beret, dark jacket and with a white dog in a tartan jacket' (not a big ask, I'm guessing) he'll discover that the penalties are quite steep.

Rape may have low rates of reporting & conviction when it is someone the victim knows and there is little corroborating evidence beyond one person's word against the other. When you are attacked outside in broad daylight in front of your children, I don't think you're going to keep quiet about it.

charitygirl · 07/03/2011 14:01

I still think arming all women would provide a better deterrent.

Fetlock · 07/03/2011 14:03

castrate the bastards

Chil1234 · 07/03/2011 14:30

BTW Who wears a beret & takes a dog in a tartan jacket with them when they go out on the prowl?...

aliceliddell · 07/03/2011 19:23

liking Booy, charitygirl and Fetlock. Chil, sadly I think U R over optimistic. Have you seen the thread about BrokenGirl on here? Unfortunately, it's too too typical of the hideous reality

RunAwayWife · 07/03/2011 19:29

The vermin that rapped my sister got 11 years and ten shades of shit kicked out of him in prison.

I would have liked to see him die TBH death by 1000 paper cuts

Chil1234 · 08/03/2011 19:48

I don't think I'm being optimistic but others are being pessimistic. Agreed that in a lot of rape cases the crime goes unreported or is reported too late and there is a poor conviction rate even if cases get to court. I know the 'hideous reality' far better than you might imagine. But in this particular case, it has been reported immediately, there are witnesses, even if they are only children, and the attacker couldn't have made himself more conspicuous if he had worn an orange jumpsuit. I'd say there was a better than average chance someone will know this man purely from the description and a very good chance of conviction once he is caught.
