Once when we were little a frind of my dads put a scary mask on and crept into the house and told my mam he was the Yorkshire ripper!

She didn't find it funny!

codface · 19/10/2005 10:04

he was basically "the bogey man" in the seventies though wasn't he. the boys used to scare us by being the ripper too.

In tyhe Guardian today it sounds as though the local newspaper in Sunderland (?) have been on a bit of a crusade to identify this man. They named him three years ago.

I can almost hear that tape in my head. Grew up in Yorkshire so heard a lot about it at the time.

monkeytrousers · 19/10/2005 15:57

Is he from sunderland?

northerner · 19/10/2005 15:58

I thought he seemed very young. How old would he have been at the time?

monkeytrousers · 19/10/2005 16:01

20 odd

zippy539 · 19/10/2005 16:01

I always thought the Yorkshire Ripper was Peter Sutcliffe? Who's he then???

monkeytrousers · 19/10/2005 16:04

It was a chant at football grounds wasn't it? Taunting the police when they hadn't caught him. Something like 'eleven-nil'..

monkeytrousers · 19/10/2005 16:05

'Wearside Jack'

link

northerner · 19/10/2005 16:43

Zippy - Wearside Jack was the hoaxer who sent letters and tapes claiming to be the ripper. Because he had a Sunderland accent police focused the enquiry around Sunderland, and some feel this allowed The Ripper (Sutcliffe) to kill 3 more women.

My dh is obsessed with serial killers, so we have loads of books on this amd have seen all of teh documenteries.

Jack the ripper is another one that intrigues us - who the hell was he?

zippy539 · 19/10/2005 22:06

Right - so Sutcliffe is the Yorkshire Ripper but this guy stuffed up the enquiry? Is that right?

Sorry for being dense but have missed the news!

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 20/10/2005 07:41

yes, the police were so convinced it was the Ripper that they confined their inquiry to poeple from the NE. They actually arrested Sutcliffe at this stage and eliminated him from the enquiry because his accent didn't match and neither did his handwriting.
Sutcliffe was released and killed three more women before the police finally arrested him.
at the time, the tape was played over and over on the radio and tv. horrible.
