How does Wandsworth do it?

It's just been on the news:

• really high salaries to its top staff (4 x over £200k)

-yet really low Council tax (lowest or 2nd lowest in UK)

• and good standard of services (according to Audit Commission)

Is it really that good? (I have a cynical mood coming on).

they do it because they are lying cheats. All ratings are pretty much self assessed. They keep your council tax cheap by charging disabled people a million pounds for their meals on wheels. Its bloody pathetic. The bastards at the top get ridiculous salaries whilst they chop all the frontliners who are on 15K and are doing about 5 peoples job for 1FTE.. That's how they do it. Oh and they also do it because they get the Evening Standard readers to pay for school children's libraries.

I was amazed when I saw this pop back up.

FionaBruise: I don't have an opinion on Wandsworth, and started this thread trying to find out more. You seem to be suggesting that the Audit Commission, whose reputation is usually very high, is colluding with Wandsworth (and other councils) in running a corrupt reporting system. That's not good for holding any council, anywhere, to account.

I think the fashion/banking/arms world is more accountable than Wandsworth/ Audit Commission

I've never lived in Wandsworth, wouldn't want to, been round there, used to work near there, place looks like a complete shit hole.

IME they are fantastic. Have never had any problems with them. Very efficient in terms of building control planning etc. Parking permits are a bit of a nightmare but that is the same anywhere central in london. Bins, roads etc all very good. Probably the only place in the country where those who pay council tax actually get reasonable value for money. I have since moved out to another borough and pay twice as much for services which are of a much lower quality.
