A friend of mine who is a talk radio presenter in New York posted this on her work FB profile - luckily most of her followers are as horrified as we are!

Like sardinequeen I am assuming this is an extension to the law surrounding what in the UK we would think of as self defence so that the law is being changed to allow the defence of an unborn child in an attack type scenario.

Personally I am very uncomfortable about extension of any rights to an unborn child.

In UK, there is an offence of child destruction covering the unborn. So we have the same idea enshrined in law that in certain circumstances harm to an unborn person is a serious crime.

I wonder if any MNetters are South Dakotans who know more about the background?

Have done some more googling on this: it doesn't permit attacks on abortionists.

Its largely irrelevant as it looks like it is impossible to get an abortion in South Dakota anyway. They are probably just trying to stop visiting Drs from other states offering abortions.

The system of law in the US is crazy. What is the point having a constitution and federal law if it just means local states spend all their time trying to find loopholes to contradict it?
