Foreign Holidays Worth the Bother?

Last year volcanoes and snowstorms messed up travel plans. We've had several British holidaymakers tragically murdered in exotic destinations. Tunisia goes up in smoke this week and places like Greece and Spain might find economic struggles mean unrest and more evacuation exercises necessary. All that and the usual suspects are still thinking up creative ways to blow up aircraft. I'm thinking the Isle of Wight looks a safe bet for 2011... anyone else?

Life is not risk free so I will not be changing my holiday ideas!

I've certainly avoided air travel for a few years but because of the hassle factor - the train from London to Avignon for a holiday in France was incredibly civilised in comparison.

And went to the Isle of Wight last year, but mainly because two toddlers and planes seemed like hell, whereas 3 hours by trains and ferry and train and bus was fun.

Will go somewhere by train again this year (IoW/France), and try to avoid flying until the security theatre gets less hysterical.

I wonder this as well. My sil got caught up in a forest fire in Ibiza last year. The resort was destroyed and she had to be rescued from the beach by passing yachts.

we can't afford to fly anywhere anyway with three children.

I agree.... with all the hassle of cancelled flights (volcanic ash/snow/fog/possibility of snow/) plus extortionate prices anyway, plus the airlines all having a million loopholes to try to get out of compensating you for delayed or cancelled flights... is it worth it?

That is the only plus side to being as poor as a church mouse, the fact that I cannot afford to fly anywhere. To have to go through all those security hoops to get onto a plane, I would almost prefer to stick red hot irons in my eyes.

I know we have the 'if you are not guilty brigade will say we have to be safe but I think has gone a little too far.

When you add in all the other natural disasters and strikes you have one of the most unpleasant modes of transport and it is polluting. No thanks.

We will be going to Ireland this year by ferry, next year we may go to France by ferry, far easier with children than planes
