organ donation

Inspired by George Best, I was just wondering if we had had an 'in until you opt out' discussion about organ donation on mumsnet? I'd be in favour of it.

All my children have recieved is blood but I think that if anything happened to them or me something from us could save another family and vice versa I think 'in until you opt' out would be good especially for all of the people who really want to but never get round to it.

There was a discussion on it a little while back. Am sure Misdee started it if you want to try and find it.
I would also be in favour.

well - don't have the inclination to go into the why's and wherefore's - but my answer is still the same as when this thread came up last time - no I still think it should be opt in.

HOWEVER, I do think that if someone HAS opted in, then the relatives shouldn't have the final say.

It would solve the problem of 'worthy' recipients too (as is the argument for some with George Best) as there'd be enough to go round. What ever Besty's weaknesses he's still a father, son, partner, etc. His family deserve as much compassion as anyone else even if you think he doesn't.

HrHQoQ I never thought of that. Do relatives have thre right to do that?

apparently so - the relatives (I believe) are always asked, and if they say no (even if the deceased has been on the donation list all their life) the rellies still get the final word (which i I don't agree with - I bet the numbers of organs available would increase noticably even if they just took the relatives right of refusal away).

Thanks Misdee. I'm on the register but my Boots points card is actually my donar card. Has anyone checked theirs?
