Smug. Trouble with that is that if you manage not to feel smug ... you feel smug about it.

I try not to feel smug all the time by telling myself how crap I am at everything. In the end my self-esteem is in tatters and all I can do is congratulate myself for not feeling smug. Then I feel smug.

I don't think it's very cosy, but then I only really read SN, AIBU and this bit.

"Smug" is the latest must-use devastating put-down for anything that someone else is not party to, isn't it?

And there's no refuting it: 'You're smug!' 'I'm not.' If you're sure you're not smug, you are. So the only reply is 'In what way, pray, do you think I am smug?' while smiling superciliously, of course. They might tell you something like, 'You always think you're right.' In which case you reply, 'No I don't!' and voila! Smuggy smug smug.

So just accept it. You are smug. I am smug. Practise the smug walk, the smug talk, wear the smug T shirt. Proud to be smug. My smugness is undeniable, incorrigible, inevitable.

What's smug in other languages? Maybe it's something only Brits have?

I think they're scared of us - the hand that rocks the cradle and all that. They realise that together we are a force to be reckoned with. We could rise up and take over the world, or at least Stepford.
