lollipop people jobs at risk

i find this really sad, it's seems the government really couldn't give a stuff and so many cuts seem to be aimed at children.

we lost our lollipop person long ago and the roads haven't been changed or improved.

there is such a need for these people - traffic is so much worse now :(

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-11989356\story here} the saving doesn't seem worth it imo, compared to children's safety

Actually the only people who benefit from the lollipop lady at my DC's school are those who drive to school, as she crosses the children over from the car park. It means that the parents don't bother getting out of their cars anymore, just turn round in the car park and let the kids out of the car.

Those children who walk (including mine) usually come from a different direction and cross at a different place as there is no pavement along the road where the lollipop lady stands so it isn't safe to walk along the road there.

I don't think its the end of the world to be honest

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 14/12/2010 15:55

Most of the lollipop people I have seen recently have been at pedestrian-controlled crossings anyway. They just press a button and wait for the green man...

DooinMeCleanin · 14/12/2010 15:56

There are two major roads to cross on the way to dd's achool. One of which is also a main route to several secondary schools and out of town. With no lolipop we'd have to set off half an hour earlier to account for having to cross the road.

ChippyMinTurnAgainWhittington · 14/12/2010 15:59

It's a false economy. Our school would be lost without our lollipop man.

It is very difficult to fill the jobs however, so I expect the reality will be not to sack crossing patrollers, but rather to not fill vacant posts, and assume natural wastage will take care of a few more.

My Grandma used to be a lollipop lady but she was a volunteer and was never paid. I didn't know they had to pay people to do it

CerealOffender · 14/12/2010 16:08

our lollipop person is a waste of money tbh. stands at quietest part of a fairly dangerous cross roads.

Bramshott · 14/12/2010 16:15

174,000 for 62 jobs works out at £70 per week in school terms, so they are hardly raking it in!

ouryve · 14/12/2010 16:53

Our school isn't on a main road, but the junction leading to it gets pretty nuts at 9am and 3pm-ish. Our lollipop lady patrols both of the roads leading from that junction and provides an invaluable service keeping kids safe and the drivers who insist they have to drive right up to the school gate, too.

In a village like ours, she's also very much a central figure in the community.

While it's not (obviously) part of her job, I found a tiny little Clarks shoe, the other week, about to get buried in the snow, so took it home with me for safe keepng. Turns out she knew exactly who it belonged to and was able to return it.

pointythings · 14/12/2010 21:46

Lollipop people earn minimum wage for a very few hours a week.

Just wait and see what happens when a child gets hurt, or heven forfend killed, at a crossing where a lollipop person once was.

Short-sighted, stupid cut, especially since it looks as if all those council Chief Execs are not going to give up a penny of their £200k + salaries...

usualsuspect · 14/12/2010 21:50

The lollipop lady was vital at my dcs school but thats because most of us actually walked to our local school

honeybeetree · 15/12/2010 21:32

We have a lollipop group who raise money to pay the wages of the lollipop man .... He is great and the children love him worth every penny..
