It isn't looking good is it? Though I suppose there's still a chance. I'd love to see a similar outcome to the Chilean mine disaster.

All confirmed dead now after a second explosion. just horrible, horrible. Cannot even comprehend what those families have gone through and wlil go through.

Terrible news. Those poor families.

I have a lot of NZ mates whose relative work in the mines. Luckily none were at this mine.
I think the waiting would have been the worst, the not knowing.
Horrible as it is that they are all dead, at least the families and friends know now and can start to greive.

You just can't imagine what they are going through can you. Utterly unthinkable. :(

It's so sad :(

There are 32,000 people on the West Coast of the South Island. 13,000 live in Greymouth. The effect on the population of 29 deaths is just enormous. I really feel for those towns and all the families involved.

So terribly sad. Was hoping for a miracle. Those poor poor families.

Pete was a friend of mine and a best friend to my husband. We are all devastated by what has happened. He was a wonderful person to know and got on with everyone. He was best man at a mutual friends wedding abroad last month. So glad they go to spend time with him before this happened. He will be sorely missed by many. RIP Peter.

Oh Green, I'm sorry. I keep looking for a list of the names in case I recognise any of them. I have old friends whose families still live in Greymouth. Half of me wants to check and half of me juse doesn't want to know.

I also feel especially for the fiance of the other Brit who was due to marry him in less than a month :-(. So sad - don't know how she will carry on.

Unfortunately I've just heard on the news that the mines will flooded with carbon dioxide to neutralise the methane.
This means that any possible survivors will be killed by suffocation in order to make it safe for rescuers to bring out the bodies. It's definitely a very difficult decision for the authorities to make.

So for the families relatives and friends of the miners.

wasn't one a 17 yr old on his first day on the job - horrible for his poor parents - horrible for everyone connected to this.
