'yes yes i'm thrilled for them (without looking at the reporter asking) it's not like they haven't been practicing for a while.'

nevermind how curmudgeonly and misanthropic he appears, surely SURELY his PR people will be jumping off cliffs as he appears to be outing himself for the bitter, envious man he is.

horrible tosser.

i've paraphrased, but you see what i'm saying?

He was being moved along by other people and he was in the middle of an official visit which are tightly timed. What do you expect him to do- turn to face the camera and tap dance?

I don't get the impression he is bitter and envious- he seems far more content now than he did even ten years ago. The comment he made was exactly along the lines of what all of our families said when DH proposed after being 8 years in the relationship- "it's about bloody time"

Heathcliffscathy · 17/11/2010 12:28

there is the difference between saying 'we're thrilled' (to camera) as if there might be the remotest chance that you mean it and tap dancing.

that's all he had to do.

camilla seemed genuinely pleased for them.

it only takes 10 seconds.

I though he looked happy about it - tbh the "practicing" comment is the sort of thing a lot of older, traditional, people would make.

He looked like the question had suddenly been shouted at him while he was in the middle of something else.

CerealOffender · 17/11/2010 12:47

god sophable don't critise the royals mn is having a reactionary bourgeois day

CerealOffender · 17/11/2010 12:47

i am still recovering from camilla saying 'wicked'

gizmo · 17/11/2010 12:50

That is, almost word for word, my FIL's reaction when we announced our engagement. FIL was genuinely very pleased - but didn't want to come over as 'gushy'. It's simply a byproduct of age and background.

domesticsluttery · 17/11/2010 12:52

Do you know many men of that age who would have made some gushing comment about an impending wedding, especially to a camera that had been stuck in front of him as he was trying to do something else? I don't.

It looked rather similar to my grandfather and my PIL's response when we were getting married. Some men just don't do stuff like that.

I certainly don't think he looked bitter or envious, more that he just wanted to get on with what he was doing!

CerealOffender · 17/11/2010 12:53

well he would ahve known they were going to ask him. and being in the public eye is sort of his job, so yes i do think he was an old curmudgeon .

Chil1234 · 17/11/2010 12:56

I don't get 'bitter and envious' from with Prince Philip. Grumpy old geezer, possibly but who is he envious about and why would he be bitter? At least he's consistently gruff and not some faked-up grinning idiot.

Chil1234 · 17/11/2010 12:57

'Charles' rather

domesticsluttery · 17/11/2010 12:58

TBH I found her parents on that clip a bit more scary, they were almost rubbing their hands together with glee! OK, I know they were happy, but still...

CerealOffender · 17/11/2010 12:59

her mother is an disney cartoon evil queen

diddl · 21/11/2010 15:54

I thought it was quite funny.

TBH I think he had said he was thrilled, delighted....that would have sounded to much of a standard response.

Maybe he should have jumped up & down & clapped his hands-like my FIL did when we announced that I was pregnant.

heymango · 21/11/2010 16:37

I thought he looked really genuinely happy for them - we must have been watching different clips!

Plus I thought that Kate's parents did really well, considering making statements to the press/on camera hasn't exactly been part of their lives up to this point.

claig · 21/11/2010 16:51

'What do you expect him to do- turn to face the camera and tap dance?'

he's not Tony Blair

ComingDownTheChimmley · 21/11/2010 17:17
