the usa is only one of two countries in the world that hasnt signed up to the United nations rights of the child. so why does this surprise you?

ladysybil I am not utterly au fait with all of the conventions, laws and so forth of every single country in the whole world, so I reserve my right to feel surprised at this story.

shocking! really, this is a sad accident, but the family are being money-grubbing tools to sue a very young child.
I expect they believe the parents have insurance that will pay out.

They're suing teh parents as well though, from what I can see, the suing of the child is a separate thing.
