It has emerged that the scrapping of child benefit for upper rate taxpayers is unenforceable and the Treasury is in a flap about, having failed to consult civil servants before making its headline-grabbing announcement. Yet another mess. Full story here:

It will be relatively simple to rectify.

HMRC can produce a new form lets call it CB499 which can be similar to form P161

Parents of both genders will be required to give details of all thier children with DoB and the National Insurance Number of their spouse.

MilaMae · 29/10/2010 19:19

Errr yes it is Hudd as it's counted as income when you take it out, it's like having best part of £200 taken out of your pay packet.

Sorry I didn't cause the deficit and there are plenty of other ways to cut it,ways that don't constantly clobber families and protect Tory voters.

Come on we're not daft, the vast majority of Tory voters are people of my parents generation who will keep WFA.That and that reason alone is why they're keeping it.

Out of my family my well off parents will be keeping their WFA,bus passes and tv license. They have no mortgage and several very expensive holidays a year, they don't need any benefits what so ever-they loose nothing.

Sil on dual income of around 80k with no mortgage, retiring early they're so loaded-they loose nothing.

DP and I the paupers of the family with 3 dc to support and get through uni eventually loose our CTC, CB,water capping, have higher mortgage payments due to the slim pickings around and the thought of massive uni fees in the future. Oh and we get to work until god knows when and a crap pension to look forward to.

We'll need MUG written across our foreheads as we of course will do as we're told, cough up as per bloody usual. No tax avoidance goes on in this house unlike your average Tory voter and my parents generation who have the money to pay accountants so they can avoid paying every penny they can in 'legal' tax avoidance.

Unfair and not right pure and simple.

carriedapumpkin · 29/10/2010 19:43

next thing they will hot is old people

perhaps they will suggest when people get to a certain age they should be given the leathal injection...

old people and young people being totally undervalued

smokinpumpkins · 29/10/2010 19:45

Sorry if someone has already suggested this - but why dont they just link up with tax credits? They have the whole family income etc, so surely would know those eligible for child benefit?

LucindaCarlisle · 29/10/2010 19:50

Do you remember those computer discs which were lost in the post about three years ago? Probably all the data needed to rectify this current problem was on those discs.

WallowsInFlies · 29/10/2010 19:51

a 1k mortgage doesn't count as a need i'm afraid.

if people on benefits are being told they have to live where they can afford (ie. a disabled person with a support network that means they can have some kind of quality of life moving out of an area because it's too expensive and HB won't cover it) so too must people outside of that. it's a lifestyle choice to have a 1k mortgage, it's also an investment. it's not a necessary living cost.

MilaMae · 29/10/2010 20:05

It isn't a lifestyle choice it's what we need to pay if we want to live near my family and support network Hmm.

As it is we can't live in Surrey(where dp's family live) as 1K per month would get us buggar all and we couldn't afford travel costs into London on top. Our dc need to be near one set of grandparents.

Whilst I have plenty of sympathies with people facing having to move out of London we can't actually afford to live near our family there and have nobody to pay our rent/mortgage to enable us to do so.

Also we are actually paying said 1K a month it's not being given to us and we have to find work in order to do so unlike people who receive HB.

notenoughsocks · 29/10/2010 20:06

Agree with boffinmum.

Radiohelen - can we come too?? (although might bring sling instead of pram) Smile

mvholt · 29/10/2010 20:07

i just cant believe this goverment and there plans! some i agree some just make me so angry! why is it always the ones that work hard, try and provide a good live for them selves, and kids! that always get hit! its ok for those in goverment with their 2 house, and everything else they claim, but the hard workers! just get hit more and more! child benefit is what it says! for the children! provide them with things they need! i dont agreee with families stuck on income support for the wrong reason, that they cant be arsed, and give the genuin ones a bad name!
companies need to give people with dissablities a fairy chance, some want to work but are shrugged off because they have a real reason to be on benefit, whilst others think its fair to have 6 kids and still not one of the parents to work!
where has the chance for parents decide who cares for their children??? child care cos are mad! if u want to go work full time, u in up paying all off your wage to the chil care provider, some parents prefere that, others would like a chance to bring them up themselves !! when are the middle class gonna get a break!

WallowsInFlies · 29/10/2010 20:11

heart full of empathy then MM.

can't afford to buy a house in surrey. shocking.

yes, it is a lifestyle choice. get a grip.

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 29/10/2010 20:20

Why can't us HRT just pay more tax and also not recieve CB? That would create/save even more money.

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 29/10/2010 20:21

I also fel very uncomfortable at the idea that benefits are available to women just incase her partner starts beating her up. What message are we sending about men?

MilaMae · 29/10/2010 20:23

We rented for many years, lived in many a dive, got kicked out at Xmas when pg, coped with many a dodgy landlord, scrimped and saved to get our deposit in order to buy so shoot me.

We have to live near one set of parents as can't afford childcare X3 or another car. Rent here is more than owning a house as it's in very short supply thanks to the 2nd home market.

We can't live and commute into London as dc's wage wouldn't cover the travel costs and another car as well as high rental/mortgage payments. We would near to be his elderly parents as we couldn't afford childcare X3 and they wouldn't/couldn't drive into London.

So yes we have got a grip as we're working our arses off, paying our taxes as usual.

WallowsInFlies · 29/10/2010 20:25

you own your own home, you have well paid jobs, a car, live in a nice area of the country and are close to family.

what exactly is it you're so hard done by over?

sounds like a good life. try being thankful.

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 29/10/2010 20:26

Mila there are other people who can't afford childcare an can't afford to live near family so they just don't have any more children. There are many people who cope with dodgy landlords but will never manage to save a deposit. Most of those people will also be working their arses off an paying their taxes.

I don't want to shoot you but you are very lucky.

MilaMae · 29/10/2010 20:30

We have 1 job with buggar all left over in our pockets each month thanks to a high mortgage, council tax, etc, etc. Money is really tight and we rely on CB,we are really going to feel it when it goes.

I have every right to feel hard done by.

fivecandles · 29/10/2010 20:32

Well, actually, I've heard that the reason they're not attacking older people is because that's where they've got guaranteed votes which they'll need given they're going to lose so many other votes.

WallowsInFlies · 29/10/2010 20:33
Biscuit
waterlooroadisadocumentary · 29/10/2010 20:33

It just goes to show how people expect different things. I can't imagine ever feeling hard done by if I owned my own home, lived near family who could support me and had 2 children.

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 29/10/2010 20:34

2 children would be a luxury to me but I meant 3.

WallowsInFlies · 29/10/2010 20:35

and could afford not to work at all.

how about getting yourself a part time job in the evenings to make up the difference.

merrymouse · 29/10/2010 20:36

Out of interest, what is the alternative to paying £1K a month in housing costs?

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 29/10/2010 20:38

Moving somewhere cheaper or living somewhere smaller.

MilaMae · 29/10/2010 20:39

I had little choice re no of children as I had twins and an alleged impossible surprise 9 months later.

I don't expect anything,I just don't like worrying about money especially money that is being taken unfairly.

merrymouse · 29/10/2010 20:39

That's great. Would there be jobs in this cheaper place?
