Statue of Dodi and Diana

Read about this yesterday in the DT, Al Fayed has erected a broze statue of his son and Princess Di in Harrods. Apparently he is depicted in an ope-necked shirt whilst she is in a diaphanous dress and they have their hands in the air releasing a dove together.

All I can say is thank goodness I'm not taking dd to see Father Christmas in Harrods this year

Had visions of it being in some London Park or as the new statue in trafalger square. Just grateful it's behind doors too!

ark · 14/09/2005 11:05

my word - here it is

Whizzz · 14/09/2005 11:06

Bluergh thats horrid & tacky

donnie · 14/09/2005 11:09

vomerama!!! pass that bucket...ooops, I see it is full....

yoyo · 14/09/2005 11:14

Appalling. Will have to stop shopping at Harrods in protest!

Whizzz · 14/09/2005 11:16

Even more vomit - I just read the description of it (don't read it you are of a nervous disposition)

"The work depicts Diana and Dodi smiling into each other's eyes as they apparently run along a beach together, with a bird poised for flight at the tip of their joined hands. Dodi's shirt is unbuttoned and the Princess is clad in a skimpy, clinging dress."

Easy · 14/09/2005 11:17

How utterly revolting.
And terribly disrespectful I think to her sons.

JoolsToo · 14/09/2005 11:19

Actually I think you're being a bit hard here.

I agree that it is a bit tacky but I think the feeling behind it is very genuine. Whatever you think of Al Fayed - he was a devoted father and was obviously devastated by the loss of his son.

Marina · 14/09/2005 11:20

ROFL Cam, but come on, we've known the man is a Class 1 loon for years...
Proud to say have declined to cross Harrods threshold all my adult years despite being a lifelong Londoner.
Take 'em to Libertys instead and caress the scarves...

Easy · 14/09/2005 11:22

Yes, I'm sure he was devastated by the loss of his son, and if he wanted a statue of him, then Okay.

But the representation of him with Diana is unnecessary, unfair to her family, and just ... well... OTT I guess

ScummyMummy · 14/09/2005 11:22

Oh man! That is crass.

But I do hear you, Jools.

Is there an ice cream parlour at Liberty's though, Marina?

Marina · 14/09/2005 11:27

Agree there Jools, he was a doting father. But Diana should have been left out of that tribute as others have said.
Not in Libertys Scummy but with Chinatown/Bodenes all sorts of other jolly places abounding, not too bothered.
Have always found Harrods a bit bling, truth to tell. And feel impoverished and de trop anywhere in SW7 too

spidermama · 14/09/2005 11:28

I've got a soft spot for that crazy old Fayed feller. Not least becauses he pisses off the British establishment. He also seems to love the British no matter how shoddily they treat him.

The statue is cute IMO [blush} but I must confess I used to 'go down Di' to gawp at the flowers and stuff in Kensginton Park after she died.

spidermama · 14/09/2005 11:32

Also, I think he sets a good example. Why shouldn't men be sentimental. It's about his son, who died really young after all.

ScummyMummy · 14/09/2005 12:01

Good point, Marina. I do like the icecream parlour at Harrods for a v special treat avec sons though. tigermoth recommended it as such on here about a zillion moons ago and she was spot on, imo.

Nightynight · 14/09/2005 12:05

A grieving father commissions a statue of his dead son. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

If you're looking for tasteless monuments to the dead, complete with statue, look at the Albert memorial.

ScummyMummy · 14/09/2005 12:09

Good point re Albert Memorial, Nighty Night. And I love that monstrosity now. Maybe in 100 years people will love the Dodana Dove statue just as much?

Nightynight · 14/09/2005 12:13

Perhaps it just needs a little more gold leaf.

fuzzywuzzy · 14/09/2005 12:23

Thassa dove

sharklet · 14/09/2005 13:37

Its vile! Even as a piece of art its vile. It deosn't have any grace about it at all.

Looks like exactly the sort of cheap tacky stunt I would expect from Al Fayed!

sharklet · 14/09/2005 13:38

It looks more like a bird of prey!

QueenOfQuotes · 14/09/2005 13:39

I don't mind the idea of it - but it's hidieous! With all his money he could at least have got a decent one made

MrsMills · 14/09/2005 13:39

Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

It's awful, surely there's a law against things like that?

Tommy · 14/09/2005 13:49

eurgh! That's hideous - remind me never to go to Harrods again
