Statue of Dodi and Diana

Read about this yesterday in the DT, Al Fayed has erected a broze statue of his son and Princess Di in Harrods. Apparently he is depicted in an ope-necked shirt whilst she is in a diaphanous dress and they have their hands in the air releasing a dove together.

All I can say is thank goodness I'm not taking dd to see Father Christmas in Harrods this year

Fair enough if he wants a statue of his son.

But, blimey, who was the sculptor? The woman from that Lionel Richie video?

gingerbear · 14/09/2005 13:51

It looks like he sent off for it off the back of a Sunday paper magazine - paid for in 60 easy monthly installments (it winds up at the base and plays 'Wind beneath my wings')

AlmostAnAngel · 14/09/2005 13:53

LOL @ snafsicle, LOL!!!!!!!

Agree with JoolsToo.
It's a nice idea, just v.tacky.

suedonim · 14/09/2005 16:46

I don't doubt that Fayed has suffered a great deal after losing his son, but I'm not sure how devoted he was. Dodi's friends threw a surprise birthday party for him when he was, I think, 30. He apparently burst into tears because no one had ever given him a birthday party before, not even when he was a child. That thought has lingered with me ever since I read it, it's so sad.

Tommy · 14/09/2005 21:43

that's really sad suedonim. I hadn't heard that before but it's quite telling.

beansprout · 14/09/2005 21:45

The dove from above on Shooting Stars is more convincing than that one.

tiredemma · 14/09/2005 21:48

PMSL OUT LOUD SNAF!!!!!

oh that is vile, its not even complimentary to either of them.

Tommy · 14/09/2005 21:52

(also thought this statue was sooooo awful that it deserved a bump for the evening )

teeavee · 14/09/2005 22:11

the dove looks more like a seagull - they look like they're shooing it away so it doesn't poo on them
i think it's incredibly tacky, but also love the way it will get up the noses of all royalty-loving posh people

Blu · 14/09/2005 22:19

But Dickens and Jones is the one true shopping shrine to Di!
After her death they had a life size cut out of her in their window. People left flowers there (of course) - and I was moved and touched to see the matching white Levi-d bottoms of 3 gay men in a row, all leaning against the window, sobbing.

Harrods is merely a shrine to cras materialism. And ice cream, apparantly.

Caligula · 14/09/2005 22:26

Fortnum's used to be the place for ice-cream. Fabulous ice cream parlour at the back - I presume it's still there, but haven't been for at least 5 years, maybe longer.

Yes it's tacky, but so are the shrines on the road in Greece. It used to be considered incredibly bad taste to cry in public. There are worse things than tackiness - cold-heartedness for example.

Knowing · 14/09/2005 22:53

Agree it's a bit crass, but actually feel sorry for Al Fayed. He KNOWS his son and Diana were murdered by the British Establishment, and will do his utmost to prove it. In the meantime he sees the preservation of their memories as 'part of the campaign'.

I know someone who gave evidence at the Diana inquest - the truth will almost certainly come out in due course....

Easy · 15/09/2005 00:00

Hmmm that's interesting Knowing.

Are you also acquainted with someone who knows the ultimate answer to the killing of J F Kennedy?

Blu · 15/09/2005 00:02

Hasn't the inquest finished? What is the truth, Knowing? Surely you can tell us, being in cognito and all?

Yes, Fortnums is THE shrine to ice cream. If you can't get to Marine Ices in Chalk Farm.

snafsicle · 15/09/2005 08:03

Mmmmm, used to live just up the road from Marine Ices - fabulous.

And as for murder by the British Establishment - er, why would they bother?

Nightynight · 15/09/2005 08:04

easy the official version of the Diana death is riddled with inconsistencies, you only have to read up the details, and what was reported in the foreign press but not in the UK.

teeavee · 15/09/2005 08:22

yep, the truth has definitely not been told on this one - I for one am definitely a conspiracy theorist!

Knowing · 15/09/2005 09:49

No - the inquest isn't over - it has been further delayed due to the amount of 'evidence' and factors to be considered.

As nightynight says, the UK 'official version' of her death is riddled with inconsistencies. I was in Europe at the time of the most recent revelations/discussions, and much more was made there than was reported in the UK.

My friend was in the uncomfortable position of uncovering some important evidence accidently in the course of his work (he wished he hadn't in retrospect...). Someone then tried to sidetrack him into believeing something else, and then when that didn't work, they started to pursue him (he believes there were 2 attempts to kill him)
He went to the police, and when he began to tell them what he thought he's uncovered, they told him to stop (in front of junior officers) and whisked him off to be interviewed by special branch. He has since moved himself and his family out of the UK - lives in Europe.

Snaf - there ae lots of reasons why the British Establishment would want to kill her/them (Dodi)

A very senior member of the Royal family is alledged to have said that "no future King of this country will have a Muslim stepfather - we will make sure of that...)
Whether or not she WAS pregnant, I don't know, (although the rapid embalming seems to suggest so?) but that would also have been a major concern for the Royal Family.
There was a very high level of concern about the threat Diana posed to exposing many fo the working of the Royal Family - things which could undermine the Monarchy, and the whole structure of Government and State etc....

Incidently, Charles & Camilla's wedding was 'rushed through' to ensure they were married before the reports from the inquests....

I know it all sounds fantastical about my friend, but I genuinely believe him, and I have seen the written transcript of his evidence - it's scarey stuff.

I was completely disinterested in the whole thing before I talked to him, but now I genuinely believe there was foul play at work

Kathlean · 15/09/2005 11:50

Knowing, not that I don't believe you. But how did you see his transcipt?

I don't know anything about these sorts of matters but it must have been very unprofessional to let a friend see it!

I have to say I'm not interested in Diana or the royal family anyway.

Bugsy2 · 15/09/2005 12:18

Statues are so ghastly. Can't believe any of you go within spitting distance of Harrods!
Al Fayed is completely crooked and a total letch. Private Eye is constantly exposing his endless financial scams & a very attractive friend of mine had a final interview with him to be Marketing Manager of the Harrods Food & Hall & he asked her to sit on his lap, stood behind the back of her chair and kissed her neck and made sure that she knew part of her position would be managing his most intimate markets!!!!
My ex-H did a stint of consultancy work for Harrods, which involved working in the building and when Al Fayed takes a tour, they blow a trumpet to announce him!

teeavee · 15/09/2005 12:22

oh my god, the trumpet thing is hilarious - the letching/sexual harassment is less funny.[sngry]

yes, he's crooked and a total letch - but prince charles isn't much better, in my book!

Knowing · 15/09/2005 12:23

Kathlean
He has been deeply traumatised by the whole affair to be honest. He has been having counselling and was told that part of the coming to terms with what he knows and has been through is to begin to talk to a few trusted close friends and family about it. Apparently he is not restricted in doing this, although not to the press obviously!

Actually, at first I just didn't believe him, and I genuinely thought perhaps he was going a bit loopy, and that's when he showed me the transcript of his evidence as 'proof' if you like?
