story here

This really shocked me.

Do you think you get to the point in being so rich you really think you can buy anything?

That family must have been devestated enough at loosing everything without someone trying to buy their daughter.

And £1,500? when he has £130million?

It was just horrible.

if he was so overcome by emotion why not tell the family he would build them a house and GIVE them £1,500 which is nothing to him rather than trying to take their daughter at a vunerable time?

agree with you. Incredible, "to give to his brother".

Mssoul · 22/10/2010 09:18

Bloody hell Shock What a warped sense of perspective, not to mention entitlement.

claig · 22/10/2010 09:20

He wasn't so overcome with emotion, otherwise he would buy all the other tens of thousands of babies with his 130 million. He wanted to help his brother
'My brother lives here and he desperately wants a baby. We can give this baby the best life she could possibly have.'

claig · 22/10/2010 09:22

not buy the other babies but invest his money in helping them and their families

What a horrible story.

I think there might be a point on the road to extraordinary wealth where you lose common sense and awareness of accepted societal norms.

notyummy · 22/10/2010 09:29

Yes he was wholly wrong, and I think he later realised that. He was however, already there to rebuild the village, so this distasteful 'offer' was on top of that.

Frankly I think we could perhaps better bashing the other multi millionaires out there who do bugger all in terms of charitable giving and fundraising.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 09:32

agree with notyummy. i can totally see that he might be overwhelmed by what is going on there, and as an inveterate deal-maker he briefly saw a win-win. but of course it was inappropriate and wrong, and he sees that.

claig · 22/10/2010 09:33

Two different issues. This is different, this is about buying a child and removing the child from its parents.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 09:34

poor guy, he did something wrong in the middle of doing lots right. hang him.

claig · 22/10/2010 09:36

'What I have to remember is that I am here to build a village. That child belongs to that family.'
Later he is seen breaking down in tears.

Philippa Lei, of children's charity World Vision, said she had been 'shocked' by the film.
'It is understandable to have a strong emotional reaction in that situation but it is not the best way to help children to take them out of their communities,' she said.
'I am pleased that James seemed to realise later that adoption was not the best option.'

claig · 22/10/2010 09:36

Rich guy, not poor guy.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 09:38

uh-huh. as philippa lei says, he gets it now.

i am quite baffled by this, tbh.

TotorosOcarina · 22/10/2010 09:38

Yea, I'm sure if YOU were sat amongst the rubble that was your home, no food, no water, no possesions and not knowing how you were goping to feed your family, I'm sure that when you were at the rock bottom place with nothing left you would hugely appreciate some millionaire kindly offering you a way out of that struggle by buying your daughte.

Just because they are poor and desperate doesn't mean they can be taken advantage of.

This man wanted t BUY his brther a child.

He saw an oppotnity and too it... realised what he had done in front of cameras and backtracked and played the 'emotion' card.

She was a newborn baby girl. How on earth could he even think it. When handed the baby he said
'Oh my god, look at that. She is gorgeous'
Of course it is shocking.
It will be shown on News at Ten

Awitch · 22/10/2010 09:41

you don't think you'd feel emotional if your homeland and people had been utterly devastated? at least he's doing something. Hmm

TotorosOcarina · 22/10/2010 09:42

Of course I would!

But I wouldn't try and take a child from its family!

He has millions, he could ahve offered them 'a good life' for that baby by sponsering her, not trying to buy her for his brother.

OP posts:
TotorosOcarina · 22/10/2010 09:43

Hes a buisness man, he wanted a baby for his brther, he saw a buisness oppotunity and made an offer Hmm

OP posts:
notyummy · 22/10/2010 09:44

I think we all agree that his reaction was wrong, and yes its says something about his psyche and what he thinks his wealth can do.

However, I still think there are people out there who would do that (try and inappropriately adopt a child) - and not be using their power/wealth to rebuild a village as well.

I still think there are much more worthy recipients of our wrath out there tbh.

Awitch · 22/10/2010 09:44

of course it will. tabloid news love this sort of thing, it's pathetic. big picture is that he is there re building an entire village with his money, small picture is that he could provide a very frail vulnerable child with a better life (oh yes he could) and saw this particular one and offered to do it. quite inappropriate of course, she is not an orphan, but i can completely see how the situation might overwhelm him and he might be very aware of what he and his family have to offer a child.

but then i don't get the big woop when madonna adopts a child either.

TotorosOcarina · 22/10/2010 09:46

He is NOT rebuilding a whole village with his own money ...

"He is asking people to donate money for new £1,500 brick homes in Jan Lunda to replace the mud huts swept away by the flood."

OP posts:
claig · 22/10/2010 09:47

In life it is the little things that count, the small picture. The small picture reveals things that the big picture hides.

claig · 22/10/2010 09:49

Does his charity extend to buying newborn babies from their mothers for £1500? Is that what the Dragons would call a bargain? Is he in? Or is he out (of order)?

Awitch · 22/10/2010 09:51

so he's set up a charity? STONE HIM

i am not saying btw that it doesn't reveal something about the man, just that it doesn't reveal something that anyone with a brain cell didn't know already... that he is an inveterate deal-maker who is capable of getting it wrong sometimes.
