this

Okay it's the Mirror...and the money didn't (directly) come out of the public purse, but are we really all in this together?

I'm sure the receptions, drinks parties other fringe events were just as nice during the Labour Party Conference Catering staff would be right up shit creek if everyone put on hair shirts and drank tap water just to make a point.

huddspur · 10/10/2010 15:54

Whats wrong with this, a private individual hosted a party that the Prime Minister and Chancellor attended.

tallwivglasses · 10/10/2010 17:59

Okay, maybe a £25k party is a reasonable way to pass the time before unveiling their spending cuts.

Isn't 120 bottles of booze for 65 people a little excessive though? I seriously hope they didn't binge-drink Shock...but left a few swigs for the catering staff.

Non-news IMO. Paid for out of someone's own purse.

So?

People throw parties on a scale like this every weekend, I'm sure.

IslandMoose · 11/10/2010 12:40

I'm afraid that it's this type of attack that allows people to trot out the old "politics of envy" line.

tallwivglasses · 11/10/2010 18:31

Envious - of spending an evening with a bunch of self-congratulatory tories?

I'd rather swallow my own vomit.

If you're not envious why did you post a thread on the cost of a private party that the Prime Minister and Chancellor attended and said it made you wanted to puke.

pippibluestocking · 11/10/2010 23:55

How about such a public display of frivolity and extravagance might just be just a tad insensitive in a week when you have announced intended cuts that will cause hardship a large section of the population

tallwivglasses · 12/10/2010 00:02

What pippi said.

What is your problem? It clearly states that this party was not funded by the public purse:

"Billionaire financier Michael Spencer hosted and paid for the ?thank you? bash at the Michelin-starred Simpsons restaurant in Birmingham on Monday night as he stood down after four years as Tory Party treasurer."

MaMoTTaT · 12/10/2010 09:02

nope - I don't get the outrage either.

Private piarty - the host could spend as much money as he wanted
