My advice to the authors of these comments is to value the welfare state while it still exists. This policy marks the beginning of the slow unravelling of the concept of universality which is central to the functioning of a credible welfare state.
By all means expect the richer in our society to pay their fair share in the austerity agenda but do this through income taxation ( include benefits as taxable income) and ensure that the greedy bankers also contribute.
What I find very sad is the sheer scale of selfishness exhibited by some of the authors of these comments.
Please remember that many older women such as myself campaigned for many years to secure the benefits such as maternity pay which younger women currently expect 'as of right'.
