So many threads about Child Benefits, but we need to get our act together and speak as a cohesive voice.

Lottiegal has started n FB page: MAKE CHILD BENEFIT FAIR FOR ALL.
Has anyone else started one too?

A FB is a small start, so is writing to your MP. But they are just small actions that need to grow. We need to get our act together on this.

PARENTS FOR FAIR CHILD BENEFIT CHANGES (Facebook)

Hello, we have started a facebook page for those who agree that the way the changes in child benefit are being made is unjust.

Wether you think that child benefit should go or stay, who can justify a household on £88,000 keeping the benefit and a household on £44,000 losing the benefit?

We accept that changes are needed but want them to be fair

See Facebook page PARENTS FOR FAIR CHILD BENEFIT CHANGES

Everyone should be interested as more chnges are coming, and you'll want them to be administered fairly, so speak up for yourself and others now.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/10/2010 18:55

thank you motherforjustice, I will have a look at your page.

I know Netmums members are up in arms about it all and someone there suggested joining forces? [ducks]

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/10/2010 18:59

I think that would be really good Avada.

I know that in other campains like 'Stop the War' they are run with an umbrella group encompassing many groups with the one same aim. I think that would be very appropriate.

bump - have "liked" it.

Misshousehunter · 05/10/2010 20:19

Why dont we set up some kind of protest march??

RosieAndGin · 05/10/2010 20:27

have emailed MP, PM, and Cleggy, we need a band of mothers and children to bring london to its knees and show this goverment that stealing from children whilst protecting the millionaire lords just aint gonna cut it Wink

RosieAndGin · 05/10/2010 20:28

Should of said, I won't be affected by the changes, it's the unfairness of it that gets my goat.

BelleDameSansMerci · 05/10/2010 20:29

Off to FB now...

rantyknickers · 05/10/2010 20:31

Have emailed MP. I posted the letter on the other thread and a couple of people cut and paste it for their MP too.

LynetteScavo · 05/10/2010 20:32

Although I think every parent should be able to claim CB, I am also sitting back and enjoying the Conservatives making twats of themselves.

What did you all expect?

And And this is just the start.

cornsilk · 05/10/2010 20:35

ditto Lynette
'I told you so' has never been more apt
Will email my MP - hadn't thought of that

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 05/10/2010 20:39

Have just 'liked' the PARENTS FOR FAIR CHILD BENEFIT CHANGES, page on FB.

Same as a few others, am not affected, but think that it is a badly thought out proposal. Also agree with Lynette that this is just the start. wait til spending review is out in October!!!

BelleDameSansMerci · 05/10/2010 20:40

Actually, I don't mind losing mine but I object to how it will be determined. Either means test it or keep it universal. The structure they've put forward (such as it is) is wrong and unfair. I can't see how hard it can be to determine a family income - we have to pay sodding tax after all!

trippingthelightfandanjo · 05/10/2010 21:06

Am about to 'like' PARENTS FOR FAIR CHILD BENEFIT CHANGES

Rantyknickers, thanks for posting your letter on the other thread. My MP is a fairly high profile figure in the Tory party these days and also prides himself on his responsiveness to constituents.. I'll let you know how I get on..

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/10/2010 21:41

A protest march is a good start, that I will join in a heartbeat, but it can only be a start really, governments like marches as they make people feel that they 'are doing something' but can comfortably ignored as noise.

OP posts:
Misshousehunter · 05/10/2010 23:02

A protest march is quite placid, who's in for a riot?! Grin

trippingthelightfandanjo · 06/10/2010 11:07

Has anyone else had a response from their MP?

I have, I'm not satisfied with it, and I'm drafting email reply.

Flighttattendant · 06/10/2010 11:11

Sorry but could someone actually put it in a nutshell what's happening about CB? There are so many threads I don't know where to start reading, and I never understand the news.

Thankyou.

Flighttattendant · 06/10/2010 11:15

I suspect only the more violent type of protest march would be noticed tbh...sadly that's not a great idea though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2010 11:30

FA - child benefit will be removed for higher rate tax earners from 2013. This will be implemented by the person who usually gets it, still getting it and the hrt payer being taxed accordingly to recover the money. It is not based on household income, so if two tax payers earn slightly less than the amount for hrt they will still be eligible despite a household income of up to around £80K+

Issues around it are -
-it could be seen to unfairly penalise single parent families and SAHM's
-the way it is being implemented is unfair.
-There is no graduated implementation so that there is no incentive for people to earn more and end up in hrt.

 • in the SE, the cost of living has increased so that someone who scrapes into hrt can already no longer afford even a very small family house as a first time buyer. So hrt isnt just for the rich.
-tories gone back on their promise of not touching child benefit.

if you do have time, people have argued far more eloquently than me on this.
