Is it true about being able to transfer your tax allowance if you are in a couple?

If it is, finally some sensible thinking after yesterday's debacle.

Will they adjust it so that if you are transferring it to someone who pays HRT you only get the same as if you transferred it to a lower-rate tax payer I wonder?

no it isn't
it used to be the case but not anymore.

amidaiwish, David Cameron has said this morning that they are going to restore it -- but, I think, that it can be transferred between parents of school-age children where one is a SAHP, rather than that it can be transferred between any old married couple. Although he's been a bit vague on details so far.

oh, cool. i think. (good news for us as i am not currently working, but will make it even less financially attractive for me to go back to work....)

That should read "pre-school and school-age"

He seemed to be saying they might think about it, but it sounded more like they have made a mess with the child benefit stuff and are looking for a quick soundbite to get them out of it.
what is the point of taking away cb and then giving it back as a tax break - surely that will cost more than just giving cb to all?

MumInBeds · 05/10/2010 09:59

Yes, but only £750 of it and only for basic rate tax payers so it does nothing at all for those losing CB. This will give an extra £150 per year to qualifying families. I'm not too sure it will be worth the admin.
