Anyone else see the irony in this statement?

"There is the necessity to have two languages - one that you use with your mates and the other that you need in any official capacity. Or you're going to sound like a knob."

Emma Thomson apparently thinks we need to learn to speak properly again. Whilst I agree with her, hasn't she just negated her own sentiments by the use of the word 'knob'?

I think she's probably done it to highlight the point she's making. (and I agree with her)

Me too

I really don't like her speaking voice though
she sounds a bit well.. rough

I think Thompson is unconsciously illustrating how sparing use of a mild vulgarity can add 'punch' to an otherwise dry statement. :) The type of person who uses 'f' every other word ends up sounding uneducated and coarse. Whereas when John Cleese used it in his eulogy to Graham Chapman, it was quite impactful.

On the point she's making... absolutely. Speech is no different to the written word. Text ungrammatical slang to your mates by all means, but if you want to be taken seriously, learn to spell & learn to speak properly.

Having just endured a bus journey with a lot of teenagers I, like, agree yeah?

ShowOfHands · 28/09/2010 18:21

I think that's what's known as bathos, innit?

pointydog · 28/09/2010 18:38

But it's alright for Emma T to slip into slang because we all know what a fabulously educated person she is Hmm

Emma T gets on my tits because the last time I saw her being interviewed she put on the most fake cockney droppin-the-endins-of-words accent I've heard a posh bird ever use.

sharbie · 28/09/2010 19:55

that would be it then pointy i thought she didn't really talk like that
