I just can't understand why

For the same reasons someone would harm children or anything else in no position to fight back. Because they're cowardly, violent, sadistic or psychopathic.

Should also add... in the case linked... grudges, revenge, disputes can be a factor as well. Someone with a grudge wants to close down the stables, perhaps, and has opted for terror tactics? It wouldn't be the first time.

Don't discount the extremely stupid, doing-it-for-kicks mentality that seems to be so prevalent these days. The same mentality of those vile teens repeatedly throwing a cat from a tower block, the video of which was on YouTube I think.

With my Miss Marple hat on I think this one is a little more planned out. Cat and towerblock is a nasty but essentially opportunist crime. The people doing this had to get hold of apples, pins, screws etc., prep their booby-traps and then carry it all out to the field, presumably at night when no-one was around. 'Dressmaker pins' aren't all that common a household item these days.

So we're looking for a vicious but cowardly person/peope with dressmaking/tailoring connections, angry with either horses as a species, horse-riders as a subset or the stables owner. Should be quite easy to track down...

i know these stables, went to look at a couple of horses for sale there. So sad.

Years ago there was a case in SELondon where some thugs had hammered 4" nails into several ponies necks. Cruelty in some people is unbelievable.

I hope they are caught and dealt with severely.
