OMG New dangers discovered with taking SSRIs!!!!

I read something this morning about SSRI's (new type antidepressants for those that don't know).

It said there was new research that showed taking these in the 1st trimester of pregnancy increased your chances of having a malformed baby by 40%!!!!

AND Seroxat in particular has been linked with actually causing suicidal thoughts!!!!!

Must try to find a link somewhere.... I didn't get a chance to read the whole article.

I must remember to watch that. I'm not on Seroxat but I've been on Cipramil (also an SSRI) since ds2 was born (4 years in December) and am having a hell of a job coming off it. I think the medical profession are underestimating how hard it can be to come off these drugs.

Enid - Not about the birth defects surely??? How many women are taking SSRI's when they fall pregnant accidentally? 40% is HUGE increase in risks!

although it always seemed strange that you arent supposed to drink coffee/take painkillers but can take anti-depressants - never seemed to make much common sense to me

Enid - Yes you can take the Tricyclic AntiD's in pregnancy as they have been around for ages so are well researched (although have worse side effects). Its the newer AD's that are causing the concern.

i am always a bit wary of statistics like this. i assume that it means a you are 40% more likely to have a malformed baby than you would have been if you didnt take it. in that case its probably a fairly minor risk which has been blown out of proportion by the press. dont know what the actual chances are of having a malformed baby, but say it is 1%. a 40% increase would make that a 1.4% chance. it doesnt mean you have a 40% chance

Well i've been taking seroxat for 7 years now, was on it when I had my first miscarriage, have always wondered if it was to blame...

I now have a very healthy 6mth ds and took seroxat throughout the pregnancy, was a constant worry but thankfully he is perfect
