oh so the oil has all gone and everything's ok now is it?

if you saw the Times yesterday (or day before) there were clear pictures of and report about the oil still sloshing around the marsh lands ... which the press were steered clear of.

seems awfully glib to say it's all done now and we've cleaned up. I don't believe that it's "over."

In fact from something I read in the Times today it looks as though the oil might not be all that big a deal (oil lleaks into the gulf all the time, it's not the nasty "heavy" stuff and nature can do a lot to help in warmer seas). The chemicals used to disperse it on the other hand...

I was full of sympathy reading the article in question until a local businessman was quoted as saying he'd like to drop a bomb on London. At that point I rather lost the will to care so much.

One of the reasons why the catastrophe started with a huge explosion was because of the huge quantity of methane. That means that there is going to be similar amounts of other lighter fractions (ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane etc.). These fractions are volatile, so have simply evaporated.

Other infamous oil spills, such as the Exxon Valdez, have had proportionally heavier fractions (less volatile, more viscous), so have had much greater impact on the shoreline.

no-one said it's "over":-

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that he was pleased that the operation in the Gulf was "finally close to coming to an end".

"Our recovery efforts, though, will continue. We have to reverse the damage that's been done," he said.

here is a damning article on how corporations own America despite the quotes in the Press.
