that "several" sneaked in from somewhere

ISNT · 08/08/2010 09:19

I thought it sounded quite good Grin

sometimes i am writing straight from the 18th century... Grin

I agree with ISNT. It's the judge's comments that are particularly awful. Why didn't he say "So you didn't mean to kill her? Well, here's a radical idea, how about not punching people in the neck if you mean them no harm."

Calling it a "tiff" is trivialising the death of this poor woman, and praising her killer for his entirely irrelevant public life just beggars belief.

And that's before we even mention the sentence."

I absolutely agree.

PrincessFiorimonde · 08/08/2010 23:46

Daftpunk: "y'know women joke about PMT..."oh it's great, I can kill my husband and nick stuff out of waitrose, lol" .....just blame it on the hormones"

I'm hoping that you were on a wind-up, dp. Because it wasn't even a bad joke that fell flat; it was a really horrible comment.

edam · 09/08/2010 00:11

It's ruddy depressing how often threads protesting about male violence towards women get derailed by angry men who think they have the right to order women to shut the fuck up.

GothAnneGeddes · 09/08/2010 01:21

Some people will argue the toss on anything, just for the fun of it.

This case, this demonstration of how little a woman's life is worth, makes me feel sick.

I like to read that other women feel the same. It gives me hope.

For some tosser to come on and mansplain and come out with drivel about cakes is utterly infuriating.

daftpunk · 09/08/2010 08:47

PF;

I wasn't trying to be funny, telling jokes is not something I do, and not something I'd advise anyone to do on a thread in the feminist/womens rights section.

I was just pointing out that some women I know have said in passing, (probably while we were out enjoying ourselves) that if they ever kill their dh they would blame it on PMS ( easier than burying him under the patio and pretending he'd run off to Brazil)....I don't think they were being serious, but I guess time will tell...

...However, I went onto say that PMS is used as a defence in many cases. That is a fact, not a joke.

& If you were being completely objective, you would argue that if some women act irrationally because of hormones, why can't men? would a sudden surge in testosterone make some man act more violently?

HerBeatitude · 09/08/2010 10:01

DP perhaps you would like to link to the reams of cases where women who would otherwise have been sent to prison for murder, are let off because they had PMT.

I'm sure there are far more of them than there are of men being let off because they had a good job, or the wife had let herself go, or was nagging, or had burnt the beef.

Beveridge · 09/08/2010 10:13

"'It's a further important feature of this case that the argument arose very quickly and in your own home.
'It's not a case of the sort of yobbish violence in public which is so often a feature of one blow manslaughter "

Shock Shock Shock

What?

Because getting into an argument with your wife to the point where you hit her so hard you kill her is obviously ok as long as it's behind closed doors.

I'm sorry, I thought for the last 10 years that we were in the twenty-first century, not the nineteenth.Must have made a mistake there.

daftpunk · 09/08/2010 10:24

here

It's not an exhaustive list, (only cites a few cases) but it clearly shows that PMS is used as a defence.

I made sure I linked an article that's sympathetic to sufferers of PMS, just to prove I'm not anti-female.

PrincessFiorimonde · 09/08/2010 10:44

dp, am aware that there have been cases where PMS has been used as a defence, as per your link. Am not trying to get into an argument about how frequently/pertinently such a defence has been employed.

It was the pseudo-jokey, dismissive tone of your earlier comment that I took objection to. But I don't want to derail this thread into a discussion between you and me, so am now off to do some work instead.

mayorquimby · 09/08/2010 12:27

"But that's not the point, because there isn't ever a good reason for murdering someone "

But he wasn't found guilty of murder, he was found guilty of manslaughter.

daftpunk · 09/08/2010 13:18

PF;
I'm in apple sorting out my iphone4, absolute pile of rubbish, wish I'd kept my other phone, just wanted to say I take your point.

I will be here for hours, about 100 people waiting, (big sigh)

HerBeatitude · 09/08/2010 13:20

DP it cites only 2 cases of killing, and only 1 of killing a partner (the murder charge being reduced to manslaughter because of PMS).

It still doesn't sound as if the PMS defence is anything like as good as the nagging defence. Hmm

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/08/2010 15:21

Yes you're right, that's the point MayorQuimby Hmm
