Non- Emergency number for the Police...

Following on from a thread in _chat about some man exposed and "pleasuring himself" in an alley, where 999 may be appropriate, I went off to look st police force policies on having some other number for easy contact.

Whole of Wales can use 101 (X)
Also Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Sheffield.

Metropolitan Police has 0300 123 1212

Staffordshire Police has 0300 123 4455

(X) though perhaps not from a Mobile, yet - I have no wish to try!

Via this page on a site aimed at people in Wales, I found that a call to 101 will have a flat fee of 10p from a BT line (until VAT goes up).

Just wondered if other people had been given any info about "special" numbers to 999/112 and any local numbers. I don't remember seeing anything about using 101 in Wales and I live in the target area.

Isn't there 555 or something?

I just ring the local police station, who then fail to do anything, that's the procedure round these parts

555 is used in any N America as part of phone numbers that are guaranteed not to be used.

If a number in New York is (212) 555 1234 they'd just say "555 1234" but 555 is reserved so no-one can get 'wrong number' or harassment calls if a number for someone is given in a film or on TV, and might draw (deluded) callers.
