Eighty horses to be slaughtered...pls help

Eighty horses face slaughter because they are being evicted from their rescue centre.
The animals will be put down unless bosses can raise £600,000 to buy the sanctuary's land from it's cash strapped owner or find a new home.

But the deadline has already passed and the horses -all saved from abuse - could be kicked out any day.

Do you have a link to an official news or charity website that carries a formal appeal?

NomDePlume · 21/07/2010 18:39

why can't they be sent to alternative equine rescue around the country ?

Pixel · 21/07/2010 19:48

Hecate, found this if any help, though it says 50 horses and 30 other animals so slightly different.

I imagine they'd be hard pushed to find space in any other rescue centres atm as they are all having to turn horses away. The recession has meant a lot of people can't afford to keep them any more and it's all being made worse by the weather we've had this year. Everything was slow to get started and the grass just hasn't grown so hay has already doubled in price here.

What is the solution to this? There are too many horses and not enough owners. All the rescues are full. What is supposed to happen to these 50 horses that, for one reason or another, can't earn their keep in any way?

The slaughter solution sucks, but too many people are breeding too many fugly horses with terrible conformation (but hey, as long as they're a pretty colour who cares?) with the result that there are tons of horses with no home, no prospects, limited ability etc etc.

And from the article she says that most of the horses are too sick or traumatised to be moved. So they aren't ever going to be able to go to normal homes anyway.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 22/07/2010 12:07

If they are to sick or to traumatised to travel then maybe the best solution is to put them down. It is cruel to keep and animal alive suffering.

Not a registered charity, not a good place to send your money.

£600k could save 12,000 children who will suffer horrible deaths from famine in Niger.

Why is it worse to kill a horse than cows, pigs or sheep? . If the horses are old and sick, maybe they need to be put out of their misery.

Another one... a familiar story. Someone decides to set themselves up as a "rescue". Collects lots of horses and ponies in need, and yes, they really are in need. However, the person in question has over-stocked and doesn't have the resources to give these poor equines a secure future, so goes to the public with the sob story "horses will be put to sleep unless you help". It's sad, but also wrong that private individuals like this should "rescue" horses just to another uncertain future. A lot of people would like to set themselves up to take in needy animals but guess what? They can't afford to do it. So basically this lady now wants the public to buy her a farm so that she can keep these horses. Can someone confirm how many acres this farm is? Because 50 equines are going to need more than 50 acres, and if I remember correctly the farm is not that big.
Oh great... I look at their website and see they have taken in two new arrivals! Bertha and Percy - how bloody irresponsible is that?
I've been involved in equine rescue for a long time, and I'm afraid stories like this make me cross. I support registered charities that have a policy of rehoming whenever possible, and of course a board of trustees, published annual accounts and some accountability.
