Can an employer force you to use up the remainder of your holiday allowance or take unpaid leave if they close the company for 3 weeks to have renovations carried out?

This wasn't announced at the beginning of the holiday year. They provided 2 months notice.

You can direct when people take annual leave as long as double the notice as time to be taken. So 3 weeks annual leave have to give 6 weeks notice.
Unpaid depends on what your contract says on short-term layoffs

Yes, pretty much. As long as they double the notice period of the period of leave they are requesting pretty much. It's rubbish! So for one days holiday 2 days notice ect.
