How do you clean the roof of your oven?

After a genuine 3 hours of work my oven looks OK at first glance- used Ovenpride and elbow grease but the sides and roof of the oven are still manky. Don't think the thing has been properly cleaned in 8 years, actually (not me!). I scraped away the solid tar like crud on the floor of the oven, and grill pan using a sharp knife and care, but how will I clean the inside roof?

Can you paint on Ovenpride and leave it overnight? Should I get a Stanley blade scraper?

It still smells so do I need to dismantle and scrub the fan as could that be the source of the pong??
