June's Fledgling Flyers:"two flyers are "blooming marvellously" : here come the rest doing their flaming best"

elliepac · 31/05/2010 08:01

Welcome to the June edition of the Fledgling Flyers where we are going to attempt to restore order in our houses, chatting as we go.

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

For those who are curious, these are the Babysteps, which we all hope will restore order in our homes and make our lives a little bit easier with lots of support (and chat, and wine, and a little more chat )

So please come and join us, old and new, from June 1st.

I turn my back for 1 day and you have nattered through THREE PAGES and have gained 2 newbies! Welcome aboard - victoria sponge anyone?

Need to get some control back this evening so its a good job that I love today's babystep - I was talking to a newly wed and overwhelmed colleague at work last week about the power of 15 minutes just last week - think she is a convert

Tonight I will
cook - cottage pie & a sauce for pasta or rice for freezer
ironing
wm
dw done
s&s
DS to bed on time
me to bed early

See you tomorrow!

Toffeefudgecake · 10/06/2010 18:23

Optimistic - stuck in a lift - one of my nightmares! Poor you. How long were you in there for? Did you have to do lots of deep breathing?

Have dried, folded and put away all my washing today. (Usually, it just piles up in our bedroom). God, I feel pleased with myself. I just hope I can keep this up.

Had to cancel my MRI because my husband, who was driving me, was suddenly taken ill and had to go to bed. Unfortunately, I'd already taken the Valium so I am now floating through my evening. No wonder frustrated housewives used to get addicted to it. Wonder if the Flylady regime will keep me off the stuff or drive me to it.

Cancelled my membership of Flylady today and will stick to this thread only. I really couldn't cope with the sentimental emails anymore.

Have a lovely evening everyone.

LinzerTorte · 10/06/2010 19:26

Evening all,

I am determined to shine my sink this evening and have an early night if nothing else (and I suspect there will be nothing else). The DC's clothes are all laid out for tomorrow too; they tend to remind me if I don't get them to do it, so that's one ingrained habit at least.

dwm I thought that nattering on this thread counted as flying. But no matter how much flying I do (and it's been very little recently), I'm sure I'd have given up completely without this thread.

Toffee The tracking online feature sounds v. scary - I have vaguely heard of it but wouldn't have a clue how to use it. Atm I'm tearing my hair out (but in a more annoyed than stressed way) over a client who insists on having all currencies capitalised, no exceptions, including cents - so I found myself writing "my five Cents" today, which is just wrong to me. Aargh. (sorry, slight hijack)

Nick Relieved to hear you'll be staying with us.

OM For someone with a bad back, you did an impressive amount this morning - and put me to shame.

Should be working but a glass of wine is calling (will really have to force myself to do some work afterwards)...

LinzerTorte · 10/06/2010 19:27

Forgot to say welcome to Frubear (even if OM has welcomed you enough for a few of us)!

elliepac · 10/06/2010 20:36

Evening everyone,

Have had a bloody awful day today, starting off with a row with DH in which he was a horrible man . Fortunately he has recognised that he was horrible and came home tonight and was model husband. As a result of said argument have been in a foul mood all day until I taught my highly intelligent and funny Year 10's who cheered me up no end by being intelligent and funny . I really do love my job .

So here is the round-up .

desire joined the madness and now has a shiny sink, a clean fridge and had a wild and wonderful time in the corner of her kitchen. She also discovered the power and wisdom of sc . Well Done desire

sc dispensed wisdom and accquainted herself with all things ratty and her DH enjoys sealing a joint I sympathis with her as my DD is also being rather trying at the moment. Got to the CM's who was ready with a litany of violent offences committed .

om has been, quite correctly, granny flying today and has achieved quite a lot. The teacher in her meant she had to revise for a school quiz, nothing worse than a teacher looking unintelligent in a quiz (speaking from painful experience there ). Hope your back is starting to get a bit better .

frubear joined us. A mahoosive welcome, I remember you from the beginning of the May thread so you couldn't join us then and particularly because of the reason. om was so pleased to see you she welcomed you 3 times . Just jump on in and get started in. We are currently on babystep 10. You can just pick it up there or have a quick lookthrough the previous steps (use the babystep link I post). I hope you enjoy the thread as much as I do (which must be quite a lot because i've been here since september!) .

nick will definitely not be carted off to prison (it's a good job, who else would regale us with testicular tales ). She had a super busy day (when doesn't she?) and deserves a massive pat on the back .

dwmhas been evangelising on the power of 15, next thing we know she'll have her own TV channel spreading the word .

toffeefudgecake (who's name makes me hungry everytime i look at it) has had a washing breakthrough moment and made a 'flying start'. Well Done . Well done also on ditching the e-mails, we are all you need . SOrry your DH is feeling ill, hope he is feeling better soon . Enjoy the floating!

linzer is going to have a small tipple and lay her clothes out. Anything contributed to this thread is officially counted as flying I decree. If you are reading/typing you are thinking about flying and therefore you are flying .

missb am so sorry I forgot to wish you Happy Birthday. I hope you had a lovely day!

feetheart has been a fabulous friend .

nettie had the most humongous list again! The lady never rests .

CHairmum are you in labour . Take Care!

Big waves to everyone else pa mrsd gormers mm and anyone else my rather tired brain has missed. Back in a mo with steps!

Hello everyone, our next babysteps is literally inspirational. Bit cheesy but the fat fairy means well .

The mission for today is here

Happy flying!

PositiveAttitude · 10/06/2010 20:49

Evening Ladies,

Welcome to Desire and frubear (have you been here before, or do i recognise you from another thread?

toffee you seem to have jumped straight in and got a flying start. Well done! Good move to de-reg. Your sanity will return now without the twee fat fairy in your inbox every 5 minutes!

OM - Long time no chat!! Sorry to hear about your back, but sounds as if it is on the mend. Did youtake DH up on his offer? or whack him round the head with a rolling pin!! Hope you DSs GF enjoys it here. is she here yet? If so, she's probably camping in a quagmire, its piddled all day and with 67,000 people traipsing through fields in the rain there's an awful lot of mud already!!

Ellie well done on taking an educated guess on the exam paper. I hope all your students have done you proud. DD2 has finished all her AS's now and DS has only one more GCSE science module exam next week, then we can breathe a sigh of relief until the results in August.

Nettie you sounded all sprightly this morning, until I read that you had not even got out of bed yet.

SC, MrsD and anyone else who has been discussing ice cream makers, I have decided this is going to the top of my list for as soon as DH's job situation has been sorted. A bit of a blanket "No spend on anything unessential" going on here at the moment, but hopefully not for too much longer. I will be picking your brains for some yummy recipes.

feetheart well done for being a friend in need.

Nick You got your tax sorted out in the Nickoftime, then? Glad you wont be mumsnetting from behind bars!

DWM -Yes please for the victoria sponge, nachos, too?? Well done for brainwashing talking to newly wed about the 15 minute plan.

Hi to Linzer, chairmum (maybe the absense of posting could mean some exciting news on the way??) MissB and everyone else I've missed.

Right, so today has been a bit manic, just for a change!!

I was going to type out a list this morning, but ran out of time, so here's what I ahve been up to:
Washing x6 loads, all dried, folded, ironed and put away
Shopping done for feeding the 5000 this weekend - well, enough til Saturday mornng as I ran out of room in the fridge and freezer.
Hoover throughout ground floor and up the stairs - YAY!!!! (gold medal please )
Went into work on my day off as I have a study day tomorrow (boring!!)
Cooked lasagne - and eaten yum!!
DH went for interview. Before he went I did make a point that the dates for the second level interviews were during our holiday and he should mention this today, he came home and got himself in a right tizz because he had got confused with dates and couldnt remember when our holiday is. He eventually agreed that he should occasionally listen to me
Kitchen floor swept and cleaned
Work surfaces cleaned
Winter clothes gone through and put away for a few months
Summer clothes sorted through
Bedroom hotspots all extinguished
All three bathrooms cleaned
hotspots on stairs extinguished

So house is now ready for the onslaught. looking good, even if I say so myself. It will probably be back to square one by Sunday evening .
First of the revellers has arrived here - DD2s friend all the way from Aberdeen, collected from boat an hour ago.

Have a good evening everyone
Wine for anyone wanting or needing a tipple (Large glass for me!!)

PositiveAttitude · 10/06/2010 20:52

Ellie x-posts with you. I am glad DH saw the error of his ways and has repented! Have a glass, my dear!!

MiniMarmite · 10/06/2010 21:29

Evening Ladies and welcome Frubear

Feeling a bit bleugh this evening so have just done minimal routines but feeling like things are reasonably under control, phew! Can't keep up with all of you though - the start of June seems to have resulted in a posting frenzy!

How are you feeling OM? Ellie I forgot to say well done on preparing your class so well for their exam. Glad DH has become a lovely DH again.

Nick I was quite envious of your ranch trip (although in two minds about the prairie oysters)! Oh, and well done on not going to jail !

SC that's exactly what happened to my last ice cream maker

Toffee I hope the MRI went ok. DH had one recently and it wasn't a very enjoyable experience, but excellent diagnostic tool of course.

Waves to everyone else too...got lost in all the posts!

I have decided that I want to learn to crochet...I am really bad at things like that though - i.e if I start knitting anything my Mum ends up having to finish it for me! I'd really like to crochet a pram blanket for the new baby though. Any advice gladly received!

Off to do something useful for a few minutes before bed.

Goodnight x

PositiveAttitude · 10/06/2010 22:12

Flippin' heck, flippin' heck!!! Cats have decided that they dont like the thumping music from the festival. Tonight is just the warm-up, it is about half the decibels that it will be over the weekend!!!
Cat number 1 has shown her disquiet by nicely leaving "parcels" around the house, refusing to go outside and generally being a total pain.
Cat number 2 has disappeared.

It looks like a long weekend with lots of poo clearing!!

feetheart · 10/06/2010 22:16

Another busy day on here

Brilliant round-up ellie and PA, good luck with the feeding of the muddy 5,000 [huge respect emoticon needed]

If I'm to get to bed soon I need to get a move on so here goes:

  • Work - done, seem to have mastered invoicing
  • Morning routine - done apart from cat litter
  • Check if Tumble Tots is on - done yes
  • Take DS to Tumble Tots or watch tennis depending on above - done did both!
  • Various phonecalls, emails etc - no. MUST stop procrastinating and just DO IT
  • Mission - finish cupboard doors - done
  • Defrost pie for dinner - done
  • Buy carrots for dinner - got 25p reduced baby sweetcorn instead
  • Afternoon/Evening routine - mostly done, just need to finish off
  • More ironing - done though still have loads more to do - grrrrrr
  • Bed at decent time - here's hoping

Night night all

Waving to all you busy manic people x

Night night see you tomorrow x

Toffeefudgecake · 10/06/2010 22:58

Oh my goodness, you have all done so much. I feel exhausted just reading all your posts.

Elliepac - loved your roundup. It really made me laugh. Thank you.

PositiveAttitude - I am in awe of all you have achieved today. I was so proud that I had done one load of washing and you have done SIX! Not to mention cleaning three bathrooms, packing winter clothes away and managing to get into work as well. I don't know how you did it all in one day. What is your secret? And yes, I am glad I have deregistered from Flylady - it was all getting a bit too nauseating. (I like your nickname for her, btw).

Linzer - am finding tracking online pretty scary myself. I have worked out how to use it but am mainly afraid that I will slip up somehow and expose myself for the amateur I am. I can proofread all right, it's the new technology that's challenging me. As for 'five Cents' - that is just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Minimarmite - no MRI after all. Had to cancel because DH (who was my 'chauffeur') was ill and couldn't take me. Will have to get myself all psyched up again for next time.

Feetheart - wow. Another high achiever. Will I be this good after a few months of Flylady?

Have done my evening routine , now I have to get some more work done . No bed at a decent hour tonight, I fear.

Night night to you all.

NickOfTime · 10/06/2010 23:25

i was in such a rush this morning that i forgot to brag tell you all that my living room and dining room were hoovered and dusted last night, after being (wait for it) tidied!!!! (only because the tax lady/ babysitter was imminent, but amazing what the threat of a visitor can do, eh?

to cheer you all up, i thought i'd let you know that tonight i have to make 250 trader coins for our cub pack to take to camp... dh was sourcing materials, and has 42 minutes left to produce them so that i can get the cubs to them. if not, i get to do them myself later.

i won't have time to post tomorrow, dd2 has a doc's appt before school, and i'll be going straight to work, home to load the car and then on the road with 5 boys for a 2 1/2 hour drive...

so, packing then...

have a fantastic weekend everyone - i'm leaving my newly flyladied kitchen in the hands of dh and the dd's.

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2010 07:32

Morning all,

Lovely and sunny again here today, although I'm hoping the temperatures won't hit the 36° forecast. It's already hot enough for my liking, especially when I have to work (my "office" is on the top floor, which gets very hot in the summer).

Done so far:
Made beds
WM on (2nd load)
Muffins out of freezer for friend's visit this afternoon

Still to do:
Coffee with friends (postponed from Monday and still going ahead AFAIK!)
Work
3rd load of washing
5 min room rescues ad infinitum so that house looks halfway decent by weekend

Nick Well done on the living room and dining room; visitors are a great incentive, aren't they?

Toffee Is online tracking where several people can work on a document simultaneously? I can see that it would def. have its uses, but it sounds like a bit of a technical nightmare (to me, at any rate). What kind of things do you proofread?

MiniM Didn't someone say they had taught themselves to crochet from YouTube when I mentioned DD1 learning at school? I wish I was better at arts and crafts type things; I can vaguely remember how to knit but don't think I would be up to producing anything wearable - although the DDs did wear a cardigan when they were babies that I'd knitted when I was about 18 (passed on from DH's niece)!

PA I feel exhausted just reading about everything you've done; you sound well prepared for the weekend!

ellie Hope your day has got off to a better start today and glad that DH eventually saw the error of his ways. Great round-up again btw!

Off out for coffee now - will be back to catch up later!

Nettiespagetti · 11/06/2010 08:00

Good morning everyone

I'm gonna rush in and post my list as need focus.

elliepac · 11/06/2010 10:26

Morning all,

It's Friday! List today is quite minimal but here goes anyway:-

Evening routine
Anything else is a bonus.

Hope everyone is ok.

Back later!

OP posts:
Toffeefudgecake · 11/06/2010 10:59

Good morning.

Am pleased to report that I have done my morning routine and have just washed my kitchen floor for today's mission. And I folded and put away yesterday's washing before I went to bed (not at a decent hour though cos I was working - 1am). These are all definite improvements.

Ooo - and I have put a bag of unwanted clutter out for a charity to collect today.

Linzer Yes, each person who works on the document gets a different colour for markups and then the reviewer accepts or rejects their changes. Am feeling better about it all today because my technical support (husband) has found out how to email my marked-up work at last. In answer to your question, I'll proofread anything I'm given and have done all sorts, but at the moment I'm working on two books for a charity that supports people with HIV. Lots of legal stuff and medical terminology in one of them.

Husband still ill in bed with chronic stomach pains. He is on a double dose of strong antibiotics for a tooth infection and we are wondering if the antibiotics have affected him badly. He doesn't seem to have a temperature or anything. Anyone know if this can happen? I know my children sometimes get upset tums on certain antibiotics. Doctor is ringing us later so we can get his advice. Anyway, sorry, this is nothing to do with Flylady.

Back to work now. I can see the kitchen from here and keep looking up and admiring it.

ChairmumMiaowGoingItAlone · 11/06/2010 12:42

Hello all,

I'm still here, very pregnant, due today and fed up.

I'm keeping the dishes done, the downstairs basically tidy and the clothes clean so I figure I'm doing well

DS is having a nap now but I've got a delivery coming so can't go to sleep - but at least it is a present

Hope you're all doing well but I'm too lazy to catch up just now

Nettiespagetti · 11/06/2010 12:46

waves to sc dwm om and anyone else i have missed Where is chairmum?

Nettiespagetti · 11/06/2010 12:47

x-post chairmum glad you are ok and not doing too much x

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2010 13:07

Need a list to keep me motivated - I have an hour before I need to pick up DD2 and DS and visitors arrive. Feeling ever so slightly stressed as the job that was supposed to be arriving on Monday is already here - which is good BUT it's far longer than we were told initially. So there goes the weekend...

Chairmum Hang on in there! My second was born a day after the due date...

Nettie Not quite sure it's 36° here - more like high twenties/low thirties, but it's hot enough for me!

Toffee I'm working on a document with another translator atm, but the old-fashioned way. Now what would be really useful would be something like the chat facility on FB so I could ask her quick questions - much less time-consuming than sending e-mails. Think using FB itself might be a bit unprofessional though (not to mention the fact that I'd get distracted while I was trying to work...)

Updated list:

Coffee with friends done (was out for twice as long as I'd planned, though)
Work done but not quite as much as I'd planned (see above)
Ironing
Put away dry washing
Hang out 3rd load of washing
5 min room rescues in hall, kitchen and living room (visitors hopefully won't see rest of house!)

MrsDinky · 11/06/2010 13:15

It was me that learned to crochet from Youtube. I had done it years ago (like when I was about 10) but completely forgotten how, I made a hat for DD, which admittedly took 3 months and had to be unpicked twice, I really enjoyed it and need to start something else.

I posted on here last night but it didn't appear, must have hit preview not post and then shut the window I suppose.

Linzer and Toffee - do you need qualifications for proofreading, and do you work for agencies? It is something I used to do a lot of in my last job, I am pretty good with the Word stuff etc, and think it would suit me as a job.

PA - 6 loads of washing? Wow.......

I can't keep up with this thread at the moment, and DD wants on the computer, so going to get off now and catch up later.

Toffeefudgecake · 11/06/2010 13:52

MIL doing my ironing for me! That's cheating, I think.

LinzerYes, FB would be too dodgy for work, I think. Better to keep separate. I understand the stress of work arriving when you don't expect it. Have been sent loads of work unexpectedly with only five days to get it done. Can hardly say, "But I have a million other things to get done as well - kids, Flylady, chatting on Mumsnet", so am getting stressed about it now. Will just have to work hard all weekend. It's the constant interruptions from DC that drives me scatty.

MrsDinkyI did do a proofreading course years ago, which helped, but learnt more in my jobs, such as working as an editor (not as grand as it sounds - I was an editor for a book-information business, not a publisher). Then I did some freelance stuff. Have a look at the Society for Editors and Proofreaders on the web - lots of info and courses there.

Bye for now.

Toffeefudgecake · 11/06/2010 13:57

PS Fruitflies are appearing in my sparkling kitchen! How dare they! Have been chasing them round the kitchen with a book.

Bought some Windolene to make taps and sink sparkle. (Shiny sink, shiny sink..)

Hmm...did you all get a bit obsessive about cleanliness at the start of this Flylady programme?
