for washing waterproof (Gore Tex, etc) coats (which all 4 of us now have), instead of expensive Millets stuff. V. happy. Can also use it to clean my wool carpet, and lots of other things. Boxes in Tesco for £1.50 (10 washes). Spread the word...

Thanks for that my millets has shut down now so was wondering what to use.

I have used pure soap flakes for washing waterproof breathable stuff for a number of years. If you are handwashing you just have to make sure you dissolve all the flakes first in hot water before cooling it down with some cold and adding the garments.

So what do soap flakes do (or not do!) that normal wash stuff does/n't?! We all have waterproof coats (I have a v nice one which was a Xmas pressie) so am interested in getting the right stuff.

Soap flakes are great for washing really super-delicate stuff too. I don't tend to hand wash anything any more (I put hand wash - and sometimes even dry clean - stuff on the delicate cycle in the washing machine) but when I was at uni we only had giant industrial machines that did 'cold' or 'hot' washes with a vigorous spin, so I used to hand wash delicates in the sink with soap flakes as they don't irritate your skin like normal powders for the machine.

Woolite liquid is great too!
