Calgon for washing machines - supermarket brand alternatives?

I think real calgon tabkets are v expensive for washing machines (when it is on about 8 times a week). I have been using supermarket own version (about half the price) but no idea if it is actually doing its job or not. Just seen on calgon packaging that it says something like 300% better then own brands. Am I wasting my time with the supermaket own version or is this just marketing? Thanks very much

When our washing machine broke down, the plumber said Calgon was a waste of time. Instead he recommended a 90 degree wash using biological powder every month or so.

I do a 90 degree wash with a cup of white vinegar every month. Having said that, I also put a Calgon tablet in with every wash, but yes I agree they are very expensive... but then so are washing machine repairs!

Actually noticed limescale building up on door of our washing machine when switched from Calgon to supermarket own brand so switched back. Limescale has now nearly all gone so convinced Calgon actually is doing something better than the other brands. We use the powder rather than the tablets which works out cheaper.
