OverflowingMum · 13/01/2010 21:14

oh socks....NIGHTMARE!!!
8 of us in this house...
DS1 - black DS2 - blue, lots of, all the same, not too bad.
DD1,DD2 DD3 and DD4 all roughly 2yrs apart, with different yet similar shoe sizes = NIGHTMARE!!!
DH - black with patterns- never has a matching pair
Me- grab whatever's left over LOL

so yes...there are advantages to living in wellies!

brimfull · 13/01/2010 21:23

I may be willing to try the lakeland sock savers , but I really can't see my lot using them .

I will try though -these socks must not triumph.

I know someone who has a big tub on the landing full of all the family socks and everyone roots through in the morning to find a pair.

We don't wash them until they are paired up

cheesesarnie · 13/01/2010 21:33

we play 'the sock game' with odd socks.every time i get an odd sock in goes in a net bag and every few weeks we play snap with them.keeps the dc entertained for hours.its getting a bit silly as theyre are some baby girl socks in the bag and dd is almost 10

Hemprose · 16/01/2010 17:03

it sounds lame, but just to know that socks are the pits in other people lives, is reassuring. Socks that do not match have no reason to live...bin them ...life is too short...

SparrowFflamau · 16/01/2010 17:06

Superglue them to their feet.

Never lose any, and they get washed in the bath.

I may enter that as a tip...

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 16/01/2010 17:09

can you not get the dc their own individual net bag for the washing machine which they fill with their own socks ??? thwn they would go in as a pair or not and it would be upto the child to locate the missing one?

TheProvincialLady · 16/01/2010 17:18

We are a family of 4. We all wear clean socks every day and I never lose a sock. My obsessive system is thus:

  1. Wear socks
  2. Upon removal, roll socks into a ball and put in washing basket (everyone has their own)
  3. Every day I clear the washing from a different person's basket. Take socks from basket, wash in machine and dry either in dryer or on one of those plastic peg thingies. As I KNOW that the socks went into the machine as a pair, I pair them up at this point and check the machine if there is one missing.
  4. Put socks back in that person's drawer.

Can you tell that it really matters to me? (In mitigation I must tell you that my mother didn't take care of my clothes and I was teased for constantly wearing mismatched grey socks)

SparkyToo · 17/01/2010 07:56

I got some great socks from M&S which have the sizes on the inside - so easy to pair up. They've been really fab and the boys love the really soft feel, but have they ever got them in stock for children (after the initial pre-September getting ready for school rush) - nope!

I remember my mum moaning about socks and knickers (I have 4 sisters) when I was young - I know what she means now.

Roll on summer!!

nighbynight · 17/01/2010 08:49

PL, thats interessting.

I despair about socks too, we are a family of 5 (the Au Pair is much too smart to let her socks in with ours)

I am seriously thinking of throwing every sock in teh house away, and then buying 100 pairs of identical navy blue ones.

Of course, this does mean that dd 2(aged 6) would then be wearing size 42 navy blue socks. Would that really matter

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 17/01/2010 08:52

I want a sock exchange to keep single socks on till they get reunited with their friend (scroll down)

purepurple · 17/01/2010 08:55

DH and DS have the same size feet, so I get confused with theirs. If they end up with the wrong ones they just swap them over.
I can tell my own socks and DD wears odd socks anyway, so it's not really a problem.
Odd socks just go in the drawers with the pairs, as i am sure the other one will turn up sometime ( I am an optimist)

PDR · 17/01/2010 09:02

When I was at school we used this little plastic thingys that keep socks together in the machine... they were about the size of a 10p coin and multicoloured plastic.....

Anyone know what I'm on about?!

TheProvincialLady · 17/01/2010 09:13

Nighbynight it wouldn't work - if identical socks are washed a different number of times, different temperatures, concentrations of washing powder etc, then they will fade to noticeably different colours and you will end up with no matching pairs.

TrinityIsFuckingTrying · 17/01/2010 09:21

I gate socks witb a passion

6 in this house

I gave up on matching socks years ago

you're lucky if you get your own

nighbynight · 17/01/2010 09:38

lol PL, I can see that you have given this matter a great deal of thought.
I do put a lot of effort into the laundry, it is the only way to get 4 children off to school on time! But up til now, I have not had complete success with the socks.

I am mulling over your method. Problems that I can see are:

  • if I put a dirty laundry basket in my childrens rooms, they will chuck everything in there, regardless of whether its dirty or not. Wear 5 minutes, decide dont like the colour, chuck in dirty laundry...
  • I dont have a regular washing timetable at the moment, and dd1 would get a bit miffed if, for example, her really favourite top was held up in the washing q by ds2's stinky socks.
PDR · 17/01/2010 09:55

THESE ARE SIMILAR TO WHAT WE USED AT SCHOOL:

Northernlurker · 17/01/2010 10:02

We have a lot of black socks mostly belonging to dh but I pinch when in need. Then I have some nive patterned socks mostly from Gap that are easy to pair and the dds are fairly self explanatory and the big ones can share anyway. When I do the washing I pull out the socks and put in the sock bag and then have a pairing fest. When there is little to pair I go through all the laundry bins and just wash socks. It's very satisfying really. I like to watch history documentaries whilst pairing....

bronze · 17/01/2010 10:07

6 of us too. I've given up and bought myself some mens ones so that myself and DH use the same ones. Ds1 and ds2 do the same and dd and ds3 are the lucky ones as theirs are obviously theirs.

I still get stupid amounts of odd socks though and even supposedly identical black socks never look like they quite match

FourArms · 17/01/2010 10:17

I wash any socks I find and dry them (either on airer, washing line or tumble drier). At this point I try to pair them (still downstairs). If they have a mate, brilliant. If they don't they go into a wicker hamper basket. This is the only place odd socks should go. MILs should not helpfully place odd socks on folded washing pile to go upstairs. We have a lot of socks per person (DS1 is 5.5y, DS2 is 3.5y, I am shoe size 5 and DH is shoe size 11 so all v.different). When wicker basket no longer closes (probably holds 400 socks ) I try and pair them. I usually manage another 40 or 50 extra pairs. There are some that have been in there for years, but if they're nice patterned socks, they stay in there as the mate may emerge when we move, or visit my mum/MIL!

DS1 has boy socks, DS2 has character socks, I have lots of patterned socks, DH's socks are always easily identifiable due to size. Again with pants DS1 has 2 identical 10 packs of pants so they're easily sortable from DS2's pants.

Also, with black socks (mine and DS1's do become mixed up), I sew in thread with each new multipack. Then they are easy to pair up.

But my question..... how do you sort out boys dark coloured PJ bottoms once the labels start to fade? I hate seeing DS1 in ankleswinger PJ bottoms when I've got it wrong!

charmander · 17/01/2010 10:22

DH, DS1 and me - feet same size, all wear sam M&S black socks.
DS2 grey socks (tends to take them off in odd places and chew them)

DS3 3 x same set of sainsbury pack of 5 pairs. Can usually find at least 1 matching pair.

DS1 is about to start new school in 2 weeks and needs grey knee socks so may throw a spanner in the works.

We have just moved to NZ and found we have taken 2 socks 1 brown, 1 sort of mauve, with us, I have never seen them before in my life.

NoahAndTheWhale · 17/01/2010 10:46

I have a bag of odd socks. Every so often I pair some up. Then throw the rest out and immediately it is full again .
