Loving the blitz spirit (but for socks) idea

MistleSnail · 12/01/2010 22:46

If it helps DS1 is grey and insect pants and DS2 is black and guitar pants

I REPEAT HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

bosch · 12/01/2010 22:48

Never, I repeat never, buy the same colour/style socks for boys who are two years apart.

After three washes, I can't tell which are the big ones and which are the little ones.

What was I thinking. One has a million socks in his drawer and the other has none. Oh, does it really matter what size socks they wear?

brimfull · 12/01/2010 22:50

we have given up wearing matchiing ones

if they are matching we feel we should go out somewhere spaecial

We have given up with the pairing but it does not matter as we live in wellies.

Dd has black socks so her feet are always tidier than ours.

brimfull · 12/01/2010 22:53

lololol

yes I would do that if I could be arsed

I counted the socks on the drying rack once. Was 50 something.
Have tried all approaches-
bright colourful socks, easy to match
everyone wears black, no need to match
When dcs were smaller I used to have get togethers with friend who we spent a lot of time with and amalgamated our odd sock baskets, managed quite a few new matches.
My most recent campaign has been
nobodys socks get washed unless they are put in the washing bin already paired
hasn't worked.
I despair.

crockydoodle · 13/01/2010 18:28

6 people in our house. I have a whole big bag of unmatched socks. Some of them have been there for several years. Why is it always the best ones that lose their pair? The holey ones i can always match.

CremeDeMenthe · 13/01/2010 18:39

I have a sock amnesty every so often, chuck em all out and start again.
DS1 & 2 share fifteen identical pairs of grey school socks. Plus a dozen stripy pairs which could be worn unmatched without looking unintentionally odd.
DD has identical pairs of white school socks, plus several very similar pairs for out of school.

crockydoodle · 13/01/2010 18:45

Liking the idea of a sock amnesty

blametheparents · 13/01/2010 18:47

ATM our laundry basket is just completely full.
Our washing machine is broken.

I DREAM of being able to match up clean, dry socks.

swanriver · 13/01/2010 18:49

I put the age-appropriate socks in the drawers unmatched. The people who wear them have to match them, or not (if they don't want to)

I also follow the path of Mistlesnail. Always buy wildly dffernt styles and patterns for each child/adult. But all the same ifysim.

travellingwilbury · 13/01/2010 18:50

I did a sock amnesty about 6 months ago . The trouble was nobody told the socks that they had to march neatly to the bin . The old ones whose pairs had been chucked started appearing again

They have a life of their own I am sure

We have something similiar to these, and no-one puts socks in the basket without them!! took a little training. But everyone in the house now uses them.

I also get the kids 11 & 8 to sort the socks out whilst watching telly, so they have extra incentive to use them, we very very rarely have odd socks now, and I started using them when DS was about 4, so about 4 years ago, total Godsend!!!

swanriver · 13/01/2010 18:52

Funny though how dd's identical white socks slowly take on different hues of grey pink and beige so that you end up having to match them too I've possibly higher standards than I thought...

FlightAttendant · 13/01/2010 18:52

I was going to start a thread for some weeks actually

why do we always have 41 odd socks? It isn't the same ones btw, just always 41. Every time.

swanriver · 13/01/2010 18:54

And one day, when there are NO clean dry socks you will find yourself sneaking a look in the odd sock bag...or wishing you hadn't been so ruthless to chuck them. AARGH then the trouble starts.

FlightAttendant · 13/01/2010 18:55

Our system is thus:

chuck socks randomly into designated area of living room whilst having weekly tidy up

assimilate said pile into washing machine somehow, along with everything else

Get them out

hang everything else up, take socks and pants to bedroom and place on airer

remove socks from airer, chuck into pile next to drawers.

Sort socks into pairs, place in appropriate drawer...tucking pairs together of course.

Counta remaining heap, which is pointless as there are always 41.

swanriver · 13/01/2010 18:55

But why are you counting them..FA? Is it a soothng mantra, or a search for lost sheep?

TabithaTwitchet · 13/01/2010 18:55

Our system is bright coloured, ideally patterned socks that are easy to pair up. DH has black socks with bright coloured toes.

I pair them up as I hang them up to dry, and 2 yr old DD enjoys helping me - she roots through the basket till she finds a sock, then holds it up saying "Daddy sock" (or whoever's it is) .

If a sock gets washed without it's partner, it goes straight back into the dirty linen basket, and fingers crossed both socks come through reunited in the next wash.
