where can I buy affordable furniture?

We're doing a large amount of work on our house over the next couple of months and I'm going to have to buy a few items of furniture, e.g. a cabinet / cupboard of some sort to house my 'good' china & glassware, a coffee table, a small sofa.

I like the minimalist, modern style of Ikea stuff (and we live in a very modern house) but I can't find anything I want at the moment.

It doesn't need to be quite as affordable as Ikea, I could run to John Lewis at a push, but definitely not Conran Shop, if that helps define the price range!

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Lombok?

Too expensive for me, but I love it.

second hand?
There are often charities selling good quality stuff on. We have one round here but you would need to research near you

Habitat?

Must admit the last thing we bought furniture-wise was from a charity shop!

Pineapplechunks · 02/01/2010 16:37

Second-hand from ebay?

There's a lovely store in Lakeside Thurrock though I can't remember it's name...It's for letters rather than a name iyswim. The letters are in bright colours...anyone?

wish I'd never looked at the Lombok site now because it's lovely stuff, but probably out of my price range!

Might have to have a look through ebay, although it's with some trepidation given that the biggest thing I've ever bought previously was a Pyrex jelly mold!

Ebay?

I got a £900 Heals chest of drawers for £250 last year. Very pleasing.

I got a Pinetum king size bed frame and two bedside chests (should have been about £700 for the bed frame and £400 ish for the bedsides) for £450 including delivery on ebay last year - ebay is the way forward if you can find a brand name you trust (I love Pinetum furniture, won't be to your taste but it suits our house) and then search for what's available on there. Our stuff was new, although the bedstead I think was ex-display - nothing whatsoever wrong with it though, and it looked and smelled new (new wood smell!)

FiveSoloRings - Its ILVA but it has closed down. Shame as it was good.

I really struggle to find anywhere that does reasonable and nice modern furniture, especially if you dont want to go to "the swedish place" (shudder!). Dwell is quite good, they do it in House of Fraser now. Good luck!

there is a new chain in Germany, that looks like a blatant copy of ikea, called möma. Not sure if its reached the uk yet.

ILVA! Of course janmoomoo ~ Thank you, that's been bugging me...sorry it's closed down, it was lovely!
