The Ideal Mumsnet Kitchen - what's in it?

Mine is in need of an massively urgent update after just moving in. It's circa 1979 (with original appliances and handbooks and is a gorgeous shade of olive green!)

So what would you have in your kitchen?

a chef

MintyCane · 24/09/2009 18:38

TheFoosa me too.

RubyBlueberry · 24/09/2009 19:31

LOL - aye that would suit me right down to the ground!

Are we talking appliances? Utensils? layout?

Horton · 25/09/2009 14:35

I want to see photos of your 1979 kitchen, Ruby!

In my ideal kitchen, I would have a lovely big square old-fashoned double sink, a mixer tap (but with two taps, not those modern things that unexpectedly spray you with hot water when you meant to get a dribble of cold).

I also really like that recycled glass stuff for countertops and have seen similar stuff for floors.

I slightly hanker after those incredibly glossy doors, maybe in red, but fear that in my house they would just be really obviously sticky and fingerprinty after a day. Realistically, I'd go for wooden doors in a not-too-shiny finish so that a bit of dust and toddler grime wouldn't show up too much.

I'd probably go for really plain white or pale tiles - quite like those public lavatory/tube station type ones.

FiveGoMadonTheDanceFloor · 25/09/2009 14:37

Mine is having a Belfast sink, w wine cooler fridge and a wine rack a proper in the cupboard bin.

BonsoirAnna · 25/09/2009 14:37

I want one of those little shower attachments by the taps for rinsing dishes!

Horton · 25/09/2009 14:38

old-fashioned, I mean, sorry for typo

Horton · 25/09/2009 14:40

A Belfast sink! That's what I mean by my square old-fashioned one. I half wanted to call it a butler sink but I thought that was probably wrong so I didn't.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/09/2009 14:41

A walk in larder with marble shelves and whole hams hanging from hooks.

Bleh · 25/09/2009 14:42

A pantry. That would be awesome. Lots of good storage space with those fancy drawers that glide out, rather than jerk out throwing cutlery everywhere.

RubyBlueberry · 25/09/2009 15:24

I think I may have space for a pantry! which is really exciting (ATM tis an outhouse )
I am looking at kitchens and they are so expensive, John Lewis' cheapest is £1600 not including fitting, which is a bit scary.
I think I like the glossy coloured splashback and counter tops, that are one piece - imagine, no grout to clean!

OP posts:
HeadFairy · 25/09/2009 15:36

Ruby, the last kitchen I had fitted was miniscule, it was 3m long, and 1.5m wide and replacing it, including new cooker, oven, washer dryer and dishwasher cost £10k including installation. New kitchens are not cheap.

If you want a continuous splashback worktop, look in to Corian. It can come in any colour you want, your sinks can be moulded out of it too as one complete piece so you have no joins, no cracks, nowhere for dirt to hide. It's really hardwearing, but like all good things, isn't the cheapest.

For me the most important would be sufficient storage, large pot cupboards, a pantry would be fab for food. Large freezer drawers (under counter ones so you can see what's in it instead of rummaging about in a giant chest freezer)

I would also like one of those hot water thingys that pour out water at 100 degrees, so you don't need a kettle.

I'd also like a marble topped bit of the counter for pastry making...

And most definitely a double if not triple oven.

We are talking fantasy kitchen here aren't we?

RubyBlueberry · 25/09/2009 15:39

Fantasy kitchen yes!!
My reality is a B&Q special but a girl can dream
I would so love one of those boiling taps. £400 or something??
Oh yeah... I would also like the tops really high please as DD set fire to gas cooker yesterday by chucking a plastic packet of pasta at the hob eek!!

OP posts:
HeadFairy · 25/09/2009 15:43

You could always get cheap carcasses from somewhere like B&Q and nice doors from John Lewis or where ever you like. Who cares what the back of your kitchen cupboard looks like?

I also think a double sink or even 2 and a half sinks is incredibly handy for a busy family kitchen.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/09/2009 15:48

Definitely an instant boiling water tap.
One of those big pull out storage cupboards with room for all your little jars and other crap
one of those pully things hanging from the ceiling to hang my pans on.

Ive only just had my kitchen done so already have the big ceramic sink with shower hose type tap otherwise that would of been on my list too.

A nice, polite and extremely good looking man who can cook all meals and clean up after me would go down a treat aswell

RubyBlueberry · 25/09/2009 15:56

A nice, polite and extremely good looking man to install it too please!

OP posts:
HeadFairy · 25/09/2009 16:05

Yeah, that's really important. A builder you trust. Esp if you're going to try and save some money by buying bits from different shops... ie carcasses from Ikea, doors from John Lewis etc. That way, he can come with you when you buy to make sure you don't buy something that doesn't fit with something else.

Have you looked at Howdens for kitchens? My friends kitchen from there is really great.

CybilLiberty · 25/09/2009 16:08

you can get these at Wickes

Horton · 25/09/2009 16:13

That boiling water tap sounds absolutely miraculous!

YouLukaStunning · 25/09/2009 16:19

The most important bit is a huuuge table in the middle. Preferably near a nice warm aga and a rocking chair in the corner. The pantry next door is a lovely addition too

LyraSilvertongue · 25/09/2009 16:30

Headfairy, our kitchen is huge and we had it put in last year. It cost around £5k including appliances (American fridge, Rangemaster cooker, dishwasher etc) including fitting. It's Ikea, solid oak with white ceramic sink and shower attachment taps and absolutely beautiful.

HeadFairy · 25/09/2009 16:33

Lyra - please don't say that I did so much research and they all came out at about the same price

LyraSilvertongue · 25/09/2009 16:33

Sorry, don't want to make you feel bad.
