TrillianAstra · 06/07/2009 19:32

Tell me this: what are hundreds and thousands?

I think they are the brightly-coloured strands. But I ordered them from Tesco and Dr Oetker says they are pastel-coloured balls.

PlumBumMum · 06/07/2009 19:45

I would have said they were the multicoloured strands, but Dr Oetker has lots more baking experience than me

Comewhinewithme · 06/07/2009 20:11

Hundreds & thousands are coloured strands Dr O is obviously losing the plot .

Mum has gratefully decided to have Darcie tonight so I can get a good night sleep and she will also take Darcie to school in the morning so I don't have to worry about getting up early and I can move around at my own pace.

JustKeepSwimming · 06/07/2009 20:46

Muppets - that's good. hope the hydro/crutches/physio all starts working sooner than expected.

TA - did i miss it, who are you baking for? they all sound yum!
I would have said bright multi-coloured balls or strands really, small 'bits'!

I need to get some bright red, white & blue bun cases, any ideas?

Hi - bit of a late one.

My mum is feeling a bit better. The doc is running some tests but they are thinking kidney infection now. She has gone to bed with a hot water bottle bless her.

Alice - I have tried the washing powder in the bath thing and it does work.

Cake bakers - I have used Dr O's hundreds and thousands and they are indeed balls. Have to have nice wet icing or the ruddy things roll off and end up stuck round the edges of the buns.

Suppose better add a list

Fill in child tax credit form asap
Clear up all paperwork accumulated from trying to fill out the above.
Find DH's cunningly hidden pay slips so can fill out the above.
Put washing away
Buy birthday card for Dad and post
Post parcel
Throw out all dead flowers
Go to work early for meeting.
Get to bed doing

Night everyone

I'm going to make some cakes with Darcie this week if I can but I can never get my icing good enough to go ontop hmm whats the trick there?

I'm tired and didn't sleep well but see how today goes.

JustKeepSwimming · 07/07/2009 10:02

Muppets - i dunno. if i do butter icing it's good, but runny icing with icing sugar never quite works for me. still don't know how to do creme fraiche icing either!

I am so so tired today, stayed up later than usual on the fonz webchat then went to bed but couldn't sleep because dh was making the bed too hot and was making an irritating whistling noise with his breathing, then ds woke up 5 times without giving me enough time in between to get off to sleep, finally went to sleep around 4.30 but he woke at his usual 5.30 . Am feeling very fuzzy headed and grumpy. DD seems quite tired so hopefully when ds has his nap I can persuade her to either go to bed or watch cbeebies so I can rest.

MuppetsMuggle · 07/07/2009 10:10

JKS I think you either have it or you don't when it comes to icing!

I need to get some cooking choc and cornflakes at somepoint this week I promised Darcie she could make crispy cakes.

Need to make a victoria sponge so need to get some more icing sugar too.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/07/2009 10:34

MM/JKS - the trick I find with runny icing as opposed to butter icing is to make it up with hot water but then leave it to cool down until it has formed a crust in the bowl. Then stir it and put it on top of the cake. When you put it on top, leave about 1.5-2 inches gap between the edge of the icing and the edge of the cake and you shouldn't get too much dribbling over the side.

Clairey - I have a noisy husband when it comes to sleeping, I feel your pain.

CWWM - hope it goes well with the HV!

CWWM - well done to DS! (is he your oldest?)

Ali - glad DH got away with the speeding, hope he's going to be very careful from now on.

Am being lazy this morning, on www.tvtropes.org messing about and generally drinking tea. Enjoying my days of not having to go to work.

I have no good advice on making icing pretty - I can only make things that are 'ugly but tasty'.
