I have offered to iron DH's work shirts but apparently I wouldn't do it right. Suits me.

risingstar · 20/06/2009 09:09

nope

v nearly pmsl when i confessed this at work. i wash stuff- dry it (often tumble dry) and put it away. if anyone wants anything ironing, they do it themselves. the only time this fails is when hubby insists on stuffing tons of stuff into the dryer. i then just rewash it and dry it!

people just couldnt beleive it! my reaction was, well you are always saying you don't know how i work full time with 3 kids, now you do! so judge me....ohhh and they did!

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 20/06/2009 09:39

I'm with the 'you must look crap' brigade, I'm afraid.

Okay, we could all find something better to do, but I think if I'm watching something funny on telly (usually Scrubs or Family Guy, or ideally a film), I might as well get the ironing done as sit on my arse.

Or maybe you're all busy writing novels while I'm watching telly!

PuzzleRocks · 20/06/2009 17:28

No need to worry about me OurLady, i'm stunning.

Seriously I look great
I only buy clothes that don't need ironing, that's the secret
Now if I was going around in uncrisp white cotton shirts that would look crap, but I don't ever buy such items of clothing
My mum tries to buy me things which need ironing, I simply return them

I never iron my clothes
DH irons his workshirts
Strategic drying, I like that

Darrell - That's it for me too.

PuzzleRocks · 20/06/2009 17:57

You mean you don't iron a crease down the front of your jeans Riven? Ooh you must look crap.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 20/06/2009 17:58

me until recently when I had to iron a new shirt as it looked awful, and ironed the jeans as they were a bit wet.

I looked very groomed indeed! Not enough to want to do it more though.

I have, however just paid someone to wash, dry and iron ALL my clothes for me

Twims · 20/06/2009 18:00

What would you think if a friend/relative offered to iron for you, or did it whilst you were out - ie if they had been babysitting the kids?

mummypig · 20/06/2009 18:13

I am with the OP and the vast majority of the rest of you. I hardly ever iron. Most of my clothes are denim/jersey and even the cotton ones look okay if hung up fairly carefully. Dp does his own shirts, or occasionally we hand a pile in at the launderette over the road.

I hardly ever watch the TV anyway, but when I do I usually have a pile of wet laundry to hang out, dry laundry to fold up, kids' toys to tidy away, or exercises to do. If none of those things is urgent I would rather be cuddling with dp (rare).

When ds3 was born my dad and his partner came to stay and she offered to do some ironing for me. I laughed and said 'ironing??' and pointed out all the other things I would rather have help with if she was really offering. She did a similar thing when staying with my sister. Now she thinks our whole family have an aversion to ironing. But then she is retired and has no kids and we have five between us (so far).

ilovemydogandmrobama · 20/06/2009 18:24

mil does ours! She irons sheets, duvet covers, and the kids underpants!

I love ironed clothes. I hate ironing. She loves it, so I indulge her

sickofsocalledexperts · 20/06/2009 18:29

I never iron, do not have the gene. Teflon is my friend, as with that in kids' clothes, no ironing is required. If clothes are very crease-prone, I pull them a lot when they come out of the machine and hang them on a hanger to dry. I have one t shirt, which I wish I could find again as I'd buy 100, which still looks pristinely flat after a wash 10 years after I bought it. If only all t shirts were like that!

MrsBonJovi · 20/06/2009 18:34

I dont iron...much to the disgust of a old ex boyfriend who couldnt understand it..he was worried I would look crumpled. He was a complete twonk though!

giraffesCantRunA10k · 21/06/2009 03:05

I hate ironing - never do it. Only a very crinkly dress I own gets ironed.

bigbellylady · 21/06/2009 06:12

I never iron either unless really needed - about 5 times a year !

However my m-i-l irons all the dc's stuff (including pyjamas) when they go for a sleepover......

Wallace · 21/06/2009 06:59

None at all here. I was going to say that I iron things for parties, but I haven't even bothered doing that for a while...

girlsyearapart · 21/06/2009 07:45

Nope life's too short!! Only do stuff if I'm going on big night out or s thing. (yeah right) Will iron school uniform though when they start as in my pre kids life I was a teacher and it doesn't look good when they turn up all creased.. Have probably offended massive group of people there

teenyweenytadpole · 21/06/2009 08:23

God, this is inspiring, I have the world's biggest pile of ironing upstairs and it's depressing the hell out of me. I guess the non-ironing strategy only works with freshly washed stuff though, not stuff which has been sitting around in a laundry basket for a week - however since the washing basket is also overflowing I suppose I could start with that and see how I go! Not ironing - a strangely liberating concept. Perhaps I could start not cleaning and not cooking as well. What other things could I not do??

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 21/06/2009 08:48

I've heard you can get some lovely stuff in drip-dry polyester nowadays.

giraffesCantRunA10k · 21/06/2009 10:03

I just dry everything flat. One time a top fell off the radiator and landed in a crumbpled heap and so dried that way - really really crumpled. I couldnt be arsed ironing it so just put it in again with the next wash

Its not so much the act of ironing - its the fact that I know its not essential and the faff of getting the board out and water in the iron etc. And knowing that after 10 minutes of wearing the clothes you wouldn't have been able to tell anyway!

FruitynNutty · 21/06/2009 10:07

god, no! Life is far too short

I take stuff straight out of the washing machine and fold it while it's still damp then hang it when there's a free space on the clothes horse/washing line

GreenMonkies · 21/06/2009 10:09

One of the things I look for when buying clothes is whether it will need ironing. I hate ironing, I only do it if I absolutely have to. DP does his own, ironing things as and when he wears them, but I would rather put my nipples though a pasta roller than stand ironing shirts, trousers, tea towels, pillow cases and sheets like my mum does!

So no, you are not the only one!!

oopsacoconut · 21/06/2009 10:18

I don't iron and never have. DH's shirts go to the laundry and come back clean and ironed. It's the best £5 I spend a week. MIL was horrified when I got DD a babygro out of her drawer and it's wasn't ironed, she took all DD clothes and ironed them. It has never been ironed since!

If you take clothes out of the washing machine and shake, then fold them whilst wet, leave to sit for 15mins then hang out the weight of the wet washing gets most creases out.
