Who wants to join me in decluttering?

claireybee · 06/05/2009 10:30

Have noticed The Pile has extended to several piles in all rooms and we seem to have far to much stuff that doesn't really get used.

So I'm going to attempt to declutter...

I was thinking of going round room by room and anything that isn't where is should be or that isn't needed will get either put away, binned/recycled or given to charity.

I'm going to do surfaces and obvious clutter first, but I have a feeling this could lead to emptying out cupboards

Anyone want to join me? It's more fun to do it together . Any suggestions on how to go about it also welcome.

Good luck! I don't know if you have read the slatterns today but i have a huge list to do by wednesday but have had a crappy headache all morning and i am not even dressed yet! I didn't get anything done at the weekend either, well apart from a mountain of washing! I took DD to the park instead and to a cake sale - much more fun!!

I need to declutter dining room today really but that will probably be later on.
Good luck with clothes sorting

cuntish · 11/05/2009 12:07

I so need to do this. Might try and start by doing my wardrobe today. Lots of clothes to go to charity shop, lots of junk chucked in bottom and top of wardrobe to sort through!!!

swanriver · 11/05/2009 12:20

Instead of spending hours deciding whether to keep very very nice things that don't quite fit me or I hardly wear, I have made a decision.
I have put them in a bag marked for "dd aged 14",then she can wear them in seven years. And put them in loft.

In last four months I have given away amongst other things,
Pasta machine
Baby Annabel
Several large wooden toys which were good quality and I could have kept for grandchildren but I decided NOT to (I kept the Noah's Ark sob) ifysim
Microwave
Delia Smith's Summer Collection
Thrown out 2 cots the missing parts of which I kept thinking I would find amongst the clutter, but never did.
4 good tablecloths which I did not need.

I do not miss them.

claireybee · 11/05/2009 13:54

I still haven't made it upstairs to start sorting the clothes yet

Maybe I'll make a cup of tea and take it up with me now...

Hi, very happy to de-clutter, just have one thing stopping me doing the worst "offender" - my wardrobe - I am terrified of spiders and know that I will encounter some whilst clearing it out! But am working methodically, room by room, to de-clutter! It is most satisfying, isn't it!! I said to my son that if he could possibly part from some of his things and give them to charity, we will have a day out at Longleat and he has been more ruthless than I imagined - it's not that he wouldn't do it for nothing, just thought it nice to give him an incentive! Go for it!

alicecrail · 12/05/2009 08:38

Disco i am the same! Its not that i don't want to do these things but i need DH here to spider hunt first!!

I didn't get anywhere! I didn't even do my list.

But am here now with no plans for this morning other than some emails and school admin I promised to do. Am just about to hang out some washing and empty the dishwasher and then I will do my list.

Buda · 12/05/2009 08:52

Oh and Christiana - you still need files with a filing cabinet. Otherwise you end up with one big mess. But the filing cabinet will keep all your paperwork in one place.

alicecrail · 12/05/2009 11:32

I have a filing box/case type thing and so does dh, it would work really well if we actually used them!!

Today so far i have:
Started on dining room
Cleared kitchen sides

Next is:
Finish dining room
Bathroom unit

claireybee · 12/05/2009 12:04

You're doing well alice

I did the dc's clothes yesterday, just mine to do now (not going to go near dh's!). Mine shouldn't take too long because I cleared out last year when we moved.

We have those filing boxes too, one each for personal stuff and one for dh's work stuff. then we have a mini filing cabinet for the household stuff. It's absolutely crammed full though so stuff tends to get left in a "to file" pile on the side before getting shoved in a drawer

It may look like i'm doing well, but you haven't seen the state of my house!!! I have now cleared the dining room table, i put a load of stuff in a big cardboard box for now (it is on table because we took shelves down to paint - in november! ) so that is out the way until we get shelves/better storage and the rest of the stuff i have had to put back onto the table for now. It is all my sewing stuff and fabric. I am going to try to get a big plastic box for it that will fit under the stairs (once that is cleared out

Waves at everyone

Can i join the declutter thread? I need to declutter parts of my house that are too full but don't want to throw anything out!

discoball · 12/05/2009 16:49

Hi, Alicecrail, glad to hear I'm not the only one with a fear of spiders - the damn things are stopping me de-cluttering - you might be interested in the thread "help...spiders" - have posted on that as well!! I just have to chuck everything out onto the floor from the bottom of my wardrobe, then jump on the bed and "spy" any escapees! Hubby gives me no sympathy whatsoever... "they won't hurt you..blah blah" I know that!! That's why it's an irrational fear!! Anyway, off to tackle the understairs cupboard, wish me luck everyone!!

alicecrail · 12/05/2009 16:51

I have horses and i hate getting their rugs out because of the spiders but have found that rubber gloves help a lot!

Horton · 12/05/2009 17:54

Hello, I also hate throwing things out and my house is like a voodoo temple. Will be watching this for inspiration but can't start now as I'm working tomorrow and then have a lap and dye scheduled for Thursday. I promise to start next week - please keep inspiring me!

claireybee · 12/05/2009 18:41

Horton we are on so many of the same threads it's quite scary!

OP posts:
Horton · 12/05/2009 18:56

It's true. You are me and I am you, maybe. Are you also too lazy to cook tonight and resorting to frozen pizza?

claireybee · 14/05/2009 11:51

It was not pizza...but it was curry from the freezer

Horton · 17/05/2009 12:00

Haha, close!

mogs0 · 17/05/2009 17:12

May I join too, please? I have someone coming to inspect my house on Tuesday so have been floating around it all day wondering where to start!

Ds and I have tidied his room but I couldn't persuade him to part with the 34 cardboard boxes he has stashed in the corner (I might sneak back in tonight and remove them when he's sleeping!).

I have a room that's not really a room - you walk through it to get to ds' room and has huge cupboards along one wall. This is where my pc lives aswell as all the other junk that gets dumped from downstairs - including about 10 trees worth of paperwork. This room is now fairly acceptable so it's just my room and the whole of downstairs that needs doing!

Right, I'm going to get off MN and go and have a go for 45 min before dinner.........

Horton · 18/05/2009 09:28

How did it go, Mogs?

I am still a bit sore and have to work tomorrow but my plan for Wednesday is to totally clear the dining room table of all the Stuff that is currently living on it (and preferably throw some of it away).

claireybee · 18/05/2009 18:22

Aargh I'm being really shit at this. I am doing better at tidying up as I go and not letting it accumulate too much though...

OP posts:
Horton · 18/05/2009 21:36

That's a really good start, though, clairey.

mogs0 · 20/05/2009 16:57

Well, I managed to make the house look reasonably presentable for yesterday but that involved hiding piles of things in cupboards without sorting them first. I daren't open my wardrobe because everything will come crashing out!!!
