how can I get the smell out of a thermos?

Rather a prosaic question - how can I get the nasty smell out of my thermos flask? I boiled the top of the last one to get rid of the sour milk smell, but it promptly fell to pieces. I have put some bicarb in it but it still smells - should I add water?

I was going to mention the bicarb too!

washing up liquid and bleachy water works too - put it in, put the top on, shake and rinse well
