Has anyone ever rented a "Rug Doctor" - and do they do a good job???

These carpets badly need cleaning - properly. Obviously renting a machine is going to work out cheaper than getting someone in - but are they any good???

Do they do a decent job though (the rented ones?). These carpets are pretty grim and I'd rather spend more and get them done decently than rent one and then need to get someone in anyhow.....

I don't mind the hard work - as long as I get a result at the end of it

@ £100 for one room - would definitely prefer the hard work to that sort of money!!!

I have rented rug doctor machines a few times and they are great!! I found that they clean really well and are pretty idiotproof easy to use.
I'd definately recommend it!!

I rate them too FAQ. We've got a cream carpet (what was I thinking, I was a childminder!) Its actually scarily good. You know those naff QVC type programmes, that show you the before and after stripe? Well, you really can see that, very clearly! Or maybe its just me that's a filthy swine! I think it was about £25 for the day, but I've only got living room and stairs that are decent enough to need cleaning! When you go to hire, you need to take 2 forms of ID with you.

I've just called and booked one - going to pick it up and pay just after 2.30 - so I will have lovely clean carpets by the time the DS's come back (and best thing is I have a bog standard domestic cleaner already which I can keep them clean with.......it's just not good enough to do the mammoth task I'm currently asking of it lol)

well I've done most of downstairs now - and it's looking really good - not perfect by any means (needed cleaning when we moved here just over 4yrs ago - and has had 4yrs worth of 3 boys all over it) - but much more respectable for viewers to see

wmmc - I have my own vax so can keep it looking nice. And trust me - there's no way my little monsters can make it as bad as it was before.....it was that bad

FAQ - when we changed the carpets here, we pulled the old (quite whiffy) carpet up and discovered several fossilised animals under the carpet - they may well have been voles

Inherited carpets are grim

How long did it take to dry?

Just wondering whether we would need to do it when ds was in bed?

Georgie: a suggestion on an old thread was to do it before going out to give the carpet some time to dry. What do you think FAQ?

hasn't taken too long actually - unless you have very patient neighbours/live in a detached house and have a child that will sleep through ANYTHING - I would advise not doing it at night when your DS is in bed - it's very loud.

If its only a few hours then we could go out - if overnight will have to do it while ds is in bed...

yeah definitely no more than a few hours for it to be useable/walkable on - did most of my downstairs after 4pm this afternoon (did it in fits and starts and did the last bit around 7pm) - and I'd say 95% of it is dry enough to sit on without getting a damp bum

if you want it to dry quickly, dry the area twice- ie run it over the wet bit on suck twice.drys a lot quicker.

they made my carpets lovely and fluffy- but you need to pre-treat stains first.

I hired mine from Johnsons Dry Cleaners in town - found out using their store locater on the website this morning (so was working ok then).

The cleaning stuff isn't cheap - but seems to do a damn good job.
