just wondering as i have saved everything worth saving since dd was 18 months. i have booked her into nursery for extra days next week to sort out the boxes the clothes are stored in.possibly having another girl early new year. will i really use it?

Yes yes yes. Dyed a few bits to freshen them up. My DS2 has, I think 4 garments of his very own.

Frizbe · 16/07/2008 23:17

Yes! so long as they're not trashed, absolutely.

Clary · 17/07/2008 00:02

see russel I do that too, DS to DD I mean.

everyone else tells me I can't but DD looks really nice in a plain blue T-shirt. She likes to have DS1's old joggers etc too.

Tho as she gets older I find the boys' stuff is cut so loose it starts to look not quite right...

(NB it is now v early Thursday morning >

PortAndLemon · 17/07/2008 00:05

DD wears a lot of DS's old stuff. I get quite emotional ("oh, I remember when DS used to wear this...") about it.

Amphibimum · 17/07/2008 00:42

well yeah.
i have 3 boys all born within 2.5 yrs, they dont even have their own drawers, its all in together. it only gets chucked when its hoplessly stained or grown out of by all. and they get TONS of handmedowns from their elder brother, my dss.

1dilemma · 17/07/2008 01:10

Yes reuse everything, get stuff handed down from friends and would hand it on but both my SIL and sis have refused.
My SIL has to have new everything (and complains about not being able to afford private school fees (hmm wonder why) my sis got loads of stuff handed down from friends but will take some bits when her lo is a bit older and she has worked out which way is which.
I've heard that about Boden stuff lasting before!

nappyaddict · 17/07/2008 09:12

how long do people keep their dc1's clothes? i have boxes and boxes of clothes in the loft. i meant to sell them but i haven't got around to it yet and am now thinking perhaps i should keep them for a future child but it will most likely be years and years before a second child is on the cards.

misdee · 17/07/2008 09:13

nappyaddict, some of the clothes i found for dd4 are 8years old!

silverfrog · 17/07/2008 09:16

if you have the space, I'd keep it until you have another/decide you don't want another.

I have all of dd1's stuff (and loads handed on from cousins that goes back years) and tbh, given the size of dd2, she'll probably be about 12 before she's grown out of stuff dd1 is wearing this year (dd1 is 3 - I have little and large ) but I'd rather keep it than buy a whole new load of stuff in a few years time...

KateF · 17/07/2008 09:24

Of course-can't imagine that most people can afford not to! I have 3 girls and dd3 has not had much new (in fact I think only some socks and vests). dd2 and 3 often look at an older sisters clothes and say "will that be mine next year?"

RusselBrussel · 17/07/2008 11:16

at Clary re the time!

Dd is 5, and at the moment I really like her in her big brother's khaki coloured cargo shorts, teamed with say a soft blue or pink top. She is not a frilly girly girl anyway, so it suits her!
This may of course change as she gets older.

MadamePlatypus · 17/07/2008 18:45

I think the only reason you might not reuse clothes would be a few seasonal clothes like snow suits and shorts for babies if you have a summer child followed by a winter child.

popsycal · 17/07/2008 18:47

god yes
why wouldnt you

blithedance · 17/07/2008 19:03

I was ordering school uniform (DS1 starting Reception) last week. I said, oh the smaller sizes will do for DS2 when he starts the following year. DH, a third child himself, said wistfully, "Welcome to the world of hand-me-downs".

Other problem is that our boys are so close in age that DH has no idea who is the current "owner" of many of the clothes since age 2-3 might fit either of them.

kerryk · 17/07/2008 19:22

i did not reuse to start with, dd2 was bought a whole new wardrobe even though we had loads of bags, boxes and suitcases belonging to dd1 in the attic. plus there was only 2 years between them.

after getting my next statement through one day though i seen sense i think i was kidding myself that i could afford to buy loads of brand new things for both dd's but my balance told a diffrent story.

now i pass on dd1's things to dd2 and i have even sorted through all the things that dd2 has outgrown and passed them onto other people.

only thing is i will be fecked if we do have another dd.

ahundredtimes · 18/07/2008 16:51

Does anybody NOT re-use clothes? I'd have to read the thread to find out wouldn't I.

overthemill · 18/07/2008 16:52

and i get emotional seeing friend's little ones in old dd clothes - makes me remember when she was tot.

TrinityRhino · 18/07/2008 16:53

I would be asking does anyone actually NOT re use them?

Of course you do, I dont understand how or why you wouldn't

OrmIrian · 18/07/2008 16:53

Now I'm wondering whether this whole thread is full of posts saying 'who does NOT re-use them' because we've all just said it. I bet it is.

[considers reading thread]

Yeeesssss!!!!

Have just sorted out Ds1's old things for ds2, he has already been wearing all of them for the last year but I have moved and sorted them all into sizes now. It's brilliant - I have always hated clothes shopping and I did loads when I was pregnant the first time, so once baby was here I didnt have to (thankfully as it is so hard with little ones in tow).

I only occasionally buy ds2 something particularly cheap or sweet now. It's fantastic. He is just in ds1's things all the time. And there is a 4 year gap, the only problem was storage as we hadn't a loft in our last house.

Yes, I agree chuck out the stained stuff. Or anything you avoided using first time round (stiff material or badly fitting etc) as you won't use it on this one if it wasn't any good for the other one!

Clary · 21/07/2008 14:11

I have a colleague who doesn?t pass anything on from her DD1 to DD2 because ?I like them to be in matching clothes?
