What is the best Hoover for Pet Hair?

With great trepidation we have decided to get a puppy for our SN son (8.5), but I have 'the fear' as I have never grown up with dogs. Dh has (but he doesn't do the housework ), and I am determined that the house will not smell like my dear SIL's (bless her). Puppy will be golden retriever (so quite long-haired). I have always had Miele hoovers, and I know they do a pet one, but one friend raves about her Dyson Animal one. Our current Miele is on its last legs (not helped by a temper tantrum I had with it the other day ). So time for a new one.

We have a Dyson animal as we have 2 longish-haired cats, was recommended highly by my cleaner. It is pretty good, not amazing but say 8/10. I think the problem is I just don't use it often enough so the hair build-up gets quite bad! I had an ordinary Dyson before which was not much good, the pet versions are definitely better.
You will need something with good attachments for the sofa etc - the Dyson has this, not sure about the Miele.
Enjoy the puppy, sounds lovely!

Thanks, penona - I have found a Dyson Animal on special offer in Debenhams. Will probably go for that (though have never had an upright hoover).

ooh i love my dyson animal i was devasted when dp broke my last one and sulked untill he bought me a new one! i have the cylender version, the space saver telescope one...i cant stand uprights i got mine quite cheap from a site 247electrics or something similar on the net.

ilovemydog · 02/07/2008 21:21

Um, we have a dyson DC5 and 2 golden retrievers. The problem is that the dyson head gets clogged up by dog hairs and doesn't spin. So DP has to manually retrieve the hairs out of the head part. Nightmare.

Heard though that the new Dyson is mucho better. We have a DC5 which is old.

I have the Dyson Animal Stowaway this one.

I was picked to do the Dyson trial and was given it, I have a cat and a dog and it is fantastic at getting hair of the floor and furniture, I would recommend it.

micci25 · 02/07/2008 21:22

here though am sure mine must have been cheaper than that! am @ dp letting me spend that much ona hoover. we have an edge card so was 6 months interest free credit

I'm very happy with my Dyson animal one. I've got a springer who sheds a lot of hair (in winter anyway).

Miele Cat & Dog here too!! buit to last. Wouldn't touch a Dyson.

hatcam · 03/07/2008 13:12

I've got both (one given to me I hasten to add, not some random hoover collecter ). Miele Cat and Dog best for hard floors and carrying up and down the stairs but Dyson much better for carpets, although you have to empty it every time you use it otherwise it just doesn't work properly.

2loudboys · 03/07/2008 19:41

Many thanks for all the advice - I do have all hard floors, and I haven't really had any problems with my Miele, it's just falling to bits after, erm, 10+ years. And anyway, don't think it would have been up to puppy detritus(not sure I am either ). Think on the whole, maybe I'm better sticking with what I know.

Hatcam LOL @ random hoover collecting.

Miele allergy one (black) - apparently the Which Guide rates it higher for pet hair than the cat & dog one

pointydog · 03/07/2008 19:54

woman at my work says her Rumba (or Roomba?) was fab at picking up all teh cat hair of previous owner's cat

iamdingdong · 03/07/2008 19:57

we've just got a sebo pet after our dyson died, v impressed so far

MuffinMclay · 03/07/2008 21:06

I'd love a Roomba (or the hard floor one - Scooba?) but was worried that dog hair might make it implode.

spiderbabymum · 03/07/2008 21:11

Miele Cat and dog .
We bought it cause it got a very good general review on WHICH .

And weve never had a pet !!

ComeOVeneer · 03/07/2008 21:18

I have a miele cat/dog (2 cats) and a vax and between the 2 it keeps the carpets/floors/furnishings pet hair/odour free.

Onlyaphase · 03/07/2008 21:21

We have 2 labradors and 2 cats and a Dyson Animal which is just fantastic. I wanted a Miele but they don't do bagless ones, and i am too mean to keep buying bags. Get a Dyson Animal!
