Getting fragrance out of clothes

I bought a lovely cotton sweatshirt on vinted. I think it was brand new but the previous owner doused it in febreeze/perfume.
I washed it but the fragrance still remains. I suffer from migraines and cannot wear anything with such strong fragrance.

How do I get this out?

Wash it several times in powder detergent without using fabric conditioner.

GettingFestiveNow · 26/10/2026 19:23

Hang it outside for a day or two then wash it again.

Biological washing powder, might need 2 washes but that depends on the material. and try to dry it outside which I know might be difficult this time of year

Without wanting to depress you I bought a coat from Vinted that absolutely stank of perfume.

I tried everything including vinegar washes, bio powder, hanging outside. Still can’t wear it so it’s off to charity today!

Bicarb should do it. Soak in a bucket 1 cup (about 250ml) bicarb and water overnight and also pop a cup in the washer drum to wash the next day.

Citric acid in the rinse compartment

I wash multiple times with no detergent but wih soda crystals. Hanging outside helps as well.

For ‘fragrance’ read ‘stench’

BleedinglyObvious · 05/11/2026 20:10

Depends on what they used. I'd use the bicarb method pp.

I hate the fabric conditioner smells and slimy feel so just return stinky clothes,

Sprig1 · 05/11/2026 20:13

Hang it outside for as long as it takes.

It could it be there forever. Smile

Morrisons do a laundry anti bac liquid it is great for getting out unwanted smells, alternatively white vinegar in the wash.

Perfume should come out but the 'unstoppable'-type products IME won't.
In the 1980s and 1990s eau de parfum and eau-de-toilette was heavy and would stay on clothes but would eventually fade.

What's unstoppable.

The clothes smell so bad I don't want them in the house and have a slimy feel to them.
I can't say for certain it's that product.

I see. Yes, I think the sweatshirt I bought on vinted was probably washed with that.
I managed to get 90% of that unstoppable/other smelly detergent stench out of it by putting it in cold water, washing with unfragranced detergent and letting it dry outside. So a victory. I can only smell a faint something when I put my nose close to fabric.
