Has anyone had blackout curtain coating come off in the wash?

I am so frustrated. After following the instructions for washing black out curtains, they came out of the washing machine and the black out coating on the back of them has come off in areas where they had stuck together. I washed the 90 x 90 curtains separately, so didn't overload the washing machine. Does this happen to anyone else, and what have you done to prevent it please?

Oh dear. I’m a curtain maker and blackout lining is not washable. In fact I don’t recommend to wash any curtains.

Yes- but it wasn't the washing machine, I'd paid for them to be dry cleaned!!!

I can't recall the outcome now, but think I got some money back. Years later, I did try hand washing some black out ones and the coating came off in patches too. It left speckled light coming through them! I do try to wash and re-use things for as long as possible, but dunelm sell them for a reasonable price if you need to replace them.

Yes, it all sticks together and the coating comes off I'm afraid

This happened to me this week. I’m slowing rubbing the rest of the peeling lining off. The intention is to remove it all so that it won’t look patchy when the sun shines through. I’m about 3/4 of the way there. They are from Next and I love them. They only go on the landing so it’s not important that they have the blackout lining intact. The fabric lining is fine. It’s just an absolute nightmare trying to get the rest off. They need to be wet for the peeling stuff to rub off. Once that stuff dries it sticks to anything and everything. I regret washing them.
The lining on my bedroom
curtains has become brittle and torn. I’m just going to cut the linings out and dig the blinds out of the loft to keep the sun out in the mornings.
I’m more concerned about spiders coming in through open windows at the moment. I’m thinking of getting some netting and taping it across the windows once they are open. I suspect the beasts actually live under my bed or behind the wardrobes. The cat is not good at her duties but we have an agreement that she immobilises spiders while I fetch the glass and old birthday card to capture them and put them outside. I remind her of our agreement each night before bed. She can detect and locate a spider in her sleep and pounces but does not kill. This has led to escapees running behind my bedside table and under the bed necessitating late night furniture moving. So we have The Spider Agreement now. So far it’s working and she gets rewarded with tuna.

This is the morning sun coming up! We are off to buy new curtains this morning.

Second to suggest separate linings.
really easy to attach or hang separately.

xyzandabc · 04/10/2026 08:50

You could just buy some blackout lining and either attach to existing curtains, or hang separately behind the existing curtains, instead of totally new curtains.

Misses the point, but I've never washed curtains in my life. Maybe dry cleaned one pair ever.when something spilled on a pair. I might hoover them once a year if they are looking dusty but never wash as they don't get dirty. Is this a MN thing to wash curtains?

If you followed the washing instructions then I'd complain to the company and ask for replacements. It's their error if they're not suitable to be washed and they said you could.

How do you clean curtains if you don't wash them?
