A little reset for September challenge

After a really busy summer mixing childcare/holidays/full time office based job, my house is in need of a reset.

So I’m challenging myself to do 15mins of decluttering a day, follow TOM, and set aside 2 hours of admin time per week, for the month of September.

Im hoping that will quell the quiet hum of discontent and overwhelm that I’m feeling today! Feel free to join me

I DID - so satisfying and I took our downstairs robot hoover / mop up there and even under the bed is now clear. Now to tackle my son’s room of doom and the car both of which are full of detritus not of my making .

next week job I think

Edited

I really want a robot hoover/mop but alas there are internal stairs on both floors of our house. One day…

Well done on the socks. I have children’s rooms of doom to tackle too. Too many toys and not enough boxes. The solution is to chuck the toys and not buy more boxes!

I dropped 3 bags at the charity shop today. A lovely man came in and cleaned my oven - very lazy of me but he did a great job. I cleaned out the fridge and freezer.

My job for next week is the wardrobe in the spare room which has various spare quilts and pillows in which I'm convinced we dont need.

No it’s not lazy. If you can afford it then it’s a great thing to buy some time back. Yes, the freezer should be on my list too. I’m sure we have multiples lurking in there.

I did an epic clean/organise/declutter at work today. This was long overdue and has benefitted two teams, so well worth it. Nothing at home but I plan to do a bit more in the garden tomorrow, while the weather is good.

Freezer done! Actually no multiples but good to know what we’ve got.

I forgot about the freezer I had to emergency do it a couple of weeks ago as it suddenly lost temperature ( just needed a decent defrost and a clean) but I took the opportunity to get rid of all the stuff that sits there for years unused ( basa fillets I’m looking at you ) and reorganised it with the stacking glass sealable boxes from Lidl. It’s now full of well labelled leftovers that I will use and are easy to find / defrost in those containers. So satisfying every time I open that door I smile .

I broke my own rule today. I’ve long known that I can only declutter for short periods and in smallish chunks. In order for it to be decluttered all the items to be chucked must be chucked. All the items to be recycled must be recycled. Everything that doesn’t live where it was, goes home.

Today I decided the rearrange the kitchen cupboards. What’s in the cupboard looks loads better. Now though, I can’t fit it all back in. So I’ve had to leave stuff on the worktops until I can declutter another cupboard. And this is how it starts. This is how I can end up with shit on a counter for weeks. So annoyed. Will have to start early tomorrow to get this sorted.

Well I forced myself into the kitchen cupboard to try make space. I’ve not really created anything. So now I still have the counter top mess. I have another two cupboards to sort and declutter and then the hope is that I’ll be able to clear the counter top.

So my idea of a September reset is fast hurtling towards October, with half my kitchen on a counter top. ffs.

More kitchen shuffle. I’m about to chuck around 10 pieces of Tupperware and some nasty plastic wine glasses.

September is a great time for a fresh start and a little reset! Small improvements around your home can make a big difference in creating a more comfortable space. If you're planning updates or renovations, a General Contractor Richmond BC can help turn those ideas into a practical plan.

Reading this with avid interest. Only been.in my house since March and already had to start decluttering drawers. I got no excuse as am not working at the moment- off sick so there is a reason. Think I will try the two drawers in the kitchen. . In the past I have used a 15m timer on YouTube with a voice countdown. It is amazing how much it spurs you on.

@BCBird Good luck, small and often is very wise, especially if you are sick.

Well it’s time for final thoughts and reflections as I leave September.

Pros- I’ve got through a ton of small jobs. All but one completed from start to finish. We’ve kept on top of the house and my DH has also done a ton of jobs and decluttering.

Cons- Did not do a few fiddly bits of admin but I know why. They can’t be done in 15 minutes! So I need to set aside the time to complete this in October.

I think I’ll continue a 15 minute declutter daily declutter for October. The kids rooms and kitchen still need work and I’d like to do it before Christmas.
