Where do you dry laundry if you don’t have a utility or spare room ?

I’ve folded our heated airer away that usually lives behind my desk in dining room as it drives me mad and the weather means I’ve not used it. But don’t have a home for it. We’ve no extension or big spaces. Standard 1930s semi here and only have a tiny box room as third room (had a thread on that an awhile back and some posters thought it was illegal for my son to sleep there). So in a world where not all poster have huge open plan palaces and spare rooms or utilities (this is my life ambition - a utility room with space to try laundry ), where on earth are we keeping our airers/ maidens while they dry ?

I worked as an au pair for a family in Paris who lived in quite a small apartment. They had a pulley type arrangement above the bath in their family bathroom, which was not large or particularly high-ceilinged. I could fit both kids’ weekly washing on that no problem.

They’d have been dried on racks round the range in the 30s - no central heating or hot water on tap, so the range would be going for cooking and hot water all the time.

M great granny would even be able to dry her boys’ pit clothes round the range like this.

Why don't you put the bedding in the tumble dryer?

Outside on the washing line or in the tumble dryer.

Out side in the summer tumble in the winter.

On the line in garden when it's not cold/wet out. On a drying rack in bathroom in winter.

Mine are in the garage. To be fair it’s been ‘done’ so I can plug in the heated airer and dehumidifier, and it’s insulated. In winter they’re constantly in use, in summer they’re folded up against the wall in the garage. My tumble dryer broke about 2 years ago and I haven’t really missed it tbh.

In a basket under the office desk. It’s the only space I’ve got as we don’t have a utility either (can’t believe I moved from a house with a large utility room to one without but 25 years on I need to get over it)

Outside or by the Aga on an airer if it’s wet out.

Indoor clothes line/horse. We have ceiling fan and I often put the clothes horse in my bedroom and crank the fan up and leave it all day. The movement of air really helps. We do get condensation but have very very shit windows

I used to stand ours in front of the wood burner when I went to bed in our old house. I did tumble bedding and towels in winter though. New house has solar panels so I use the tumble a bit more.

Oh….i thought it said where you keep dry laundry 🤦‍♀️ I dry clothes on hangers on the curtain rails upstairs (the radiators are underneath them so in winter dries quickly) Undies on a soctopus in the same way. Towels on the towel radiators. The only thing I put in our ancient tumble drier is bedding (I worry about clothes shrinking as they have done in the past, and towels take too long)

We have a pulley airer over the stairs, another over the bath and a small folding airer that stands in the bath when in use and lives under the bed when not in use. We also have a dehumidifier which lives on the landing and goes into the bathroom if drying there without the window open.
For small things we have metal peg airers, a bit like an IKEA soctopus, which we hang in various places including off the pulleys.

We just bought a washing line that attaches to the side of our house.we can fold it back in when not using it. I love it! I hate drying clothes inside.

Mine is in the hall all year round. It's a smaller one that doesn't really get in the way. Otherwise it's the line or tumble dryer.

We’ve converted the top of the cupboard with the washing machine in into a drying station with a rail with hangers on and a sock / pants drying peg thing. We also have rails over the radiators. I rarely need to use the airer.

When we had 5 of us in a 3 bed house we had the airer on the landing or in front of the radiator in living room. Occasionally in the bath temporarily for a little more space, if children had friends round.

When you’re not using the airer and it’s folded down, where do you store it?
When you have laundry drying on the airer where in the house do you stand it?
Maybe you don’t use one which is why you don’t understand but even if you don’t it’s a pretty simple question to understand

Tumble drier and the bits that can’t go in there go on a tall airer which fits on one of our landings (tall narrow house).

We don’t have the space for one of those massive heated airers.

Dry days outside, wet days tumble dryer. I hate having wet washing hanging around my home. Even if I did have a massive house (which I don’t).

!930s small detached house with one of those tiny box rooms. We have a tumble dryer but also use an airer, a wooden concertina type, in the dining room. There are only 2 of us now though. If you have children though it's more difficult as you need more space for things.
