Miele or Bosch washing machine for sound sensitive family

Hi,

I am trying to work out whether to buy a new bosch series 6 or 8 washing machine or a new miele for about a max £1500 budget.

My husband finds the noise of appliances very difficult to live with because of sensory sensitivity to white noise. We spend all our time sitting in the kitchen/dining room where we have the oven, dishwasher and washing machine bashing away all the time.

ChatGPT says the noise of a miele is "more refined" and I wondered if you might have any idea if that is right? They are roughly similar in decibels.

I have a 12 year old miele and it is definitely more quiet than my old series 2 bosch, but I know the current generation may be very different, and the bosch was not very high end.

I'd be glad to know what you think is the easiest to live with noise-wise. We're not think of buying a £3k miele but could stretch to £1500.

Thanks!

Bosh 10kg series 6 just arrive and it is inexplicably loud and sploshy when running. kicking myself now. Possibly should have bought the Miele W1. Rats.

Are you sure the machine is level? I seem to remember there being wee legs underneath that needed. Adjusting to stop it making such a noise.

id also contact whoever you bought it from and let them know your issues. Good luck!

Oh no! 😬
If you bought it online, I think you have a 14day cooling off period. Not sure how you'd send it back though?

I think I probably am going to send it back tbh. It's loud but there's something about the quality of the noise that I am really not enjoying. My digestion is in knots. Urgh. I've never had this with a washing machine before.

Probably serves me right for buying a miele last time. I'm ruined. Darnit

They're taking it back thank the Good Lord and all his Tiny Wizards. Ghastly noise.

Jeepers.

Back to Miele now. What a light weight I am apparently.

Does anybody have any recommendations for still available Miele washing machines?

I think I need to go back to a smaller drum like my previous 7kg. The 10kg one was more than I could stand.

... leaves to lie down in darkened room.

I recently got a new Bosch series 6 washing machine and honestly, when I first got it I had to go and check I'd switched it on as it was so quiet. It does have an alarm for when it finishes, a kind of apologetic 'bing' sound, which I think it only does a couple of times, but if I'm not in the kitchen I don't hear it.

I was just about to recommend this one. Ours is a 9kg one and it is so quiet you don't think it is working.

You can't avoid hearing it a little more when it spins but that would be the case with any washing machine.

Looks like I posted too late. Maybe the 10kg machine was too big, hence the sloshy noise. Our 9kg is really quiet.

NotReallyNotOftenAnyway · 02/06/2026 19:28

I think that's probably what it was. Too big. I think I'll go back to 8kg. The motor was pretty weird though and it made a lot of other weird noises. I think definitely one for a utility room.

would you consider a completely different make? If so I suggest that you look at an Ebac

ebac.com

They are washing machines made in Britain and designed to be easily repaired. When my Miele gives up the ghost this is what I’m going to try.

They go in and out of stock often. They are mainly oos at the moment, I’m assuming it’s because they’ve got a sale on.

worth a think about anyway/and a phone call and they’re much cheaper than either a Bosch or a Miele.

I have had so many washing machines and I thought that Miele would be the holy grail of machines. It’s lasted longer than any other and I’m grateful to it for that but its spin has never been quiet. I did try placing it on a rubber mat but it was impossible to manoeuvre.

NotReallyNotOftenAnyway · 02/06/2026 19:53

the ebac machines sound great. I gave my old machine away on freecycle and a very clever engineer came and got it to use the parts to keep his machine going. he says he does the same with his car and it has done 220,000 miles. I was impressed.

I'd really like one that doesn't have an LED screen. I get migraines from LED screens and I did go to John Lewis to look before I bought one. The Miele was worst but I couldn't look at the bosch one either with out putting a grey filter over it.

It's weird because my Bosch oven clock is really fine.

Agree - why aren’t everyone buying British

Because it's not always an option.

If you have older pipes, it might not matter.

I have a Bosch d/w and it's very quiet but b/c my house is old, the pipework is old and the noisiest thing about the d/w (and the clothes washer) is the water hammer caused by their modern valves. The machines themselves are v quiet but when they empty/fill their super efficient, modern valves snap shut and this causes air in my pipes.

My clothes washer is a Hisense and, again, it's plenty quiet (plus it's in a closet) but the water hammer effect is noticeable. It does beep quietly at the end of the cycle but just the once and I can't hear it through the closet door unless I'm standing right there. Also, it can be contolled by an app so that might be a way to silence the beeps on other machines.

The Bosch d/w does not beep but it's a basic one we bought for can £300.

edited to address beeping

Edited

I wondered why the sound of our pipes was so much louder with our new washing machine! It drives me mad, we only have a tiny house and very old pipes and the clunk sound when it fills is awful!

The floor the washing machine sits on maes a difference too. Ours is on solid concrete but when we had a suspended floor in our old semi the machine was very loud.

PickAChew · 02/06/2026 21:39

Our old machine bounced all over on our suspended floor, which probably contributed to its demise, though I think there was a bit of chicken and egg situation, there. The new one is much heavier and rock solid, even full of towels or king size bedding.

IheartColinCustardhead · 02/06/2026 22:30

let us know what you end up with in the end.

I prefer dials to LED screens too.

What did you say to return it now it’s fitted? I’ve put up with really rubbish appliances as they’ve been fitted when I’ve really wanted to send them back

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 03/06/2026 19:43

German engineering all the way here. What’s British now anyway?

FiftiesDIYer · 03/06/2026 22:18

Miele W1. We decided we dont drink or smoke. We would invest in things we rely on. So we have the expensive washer and tumble drier.
Worth it. Quiet. Great app. Very cheap to run. You can view your monthly power and water use in the app.

NotReallyNotOftenAnyway · 04/06/2026 10:20

I got a Miele WEE385 and it is fine. Makes a normal washing machine noise, thank goodness.

Chugging away in the corner of my kitchen now. Phew!

I sent it back under distance selling regulations. If you ask ChatGPT it will explain.

ItsStillWork · 04/06/2026 10:44

I’ve had both washing machines.

Miele was expensive for what it was. It was definitely quieter than the Samsung which is the one I currently have.

the Samsung I have is actually really noisy when it’s filling, but I prefer the functions on it and you can select it to have up to 5 rinses on it.

it does have a quiet wash on it but I’ve never tried it and don’t know whether that would make it fill up any quieter.

i don’t remember the Miele being noisy, but it did ruin a few clothes (it did rip some items) and was a more difficult machine to work the functions on.

with this Samsung (I’ve only had it about 6 weeks) the first thing I noticed was how noisy it was

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff We have a Miele and while you cannot turn the end of cycle beeps off you can turn the volume down to zero so it makes no noise. I don't know which model you have but maybe you can do the same on your machine?

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff Would it be okay to ask how you turned the volume down on the end of cycle beep? We just got to the end of the first cycle and the beep is incredibly piercing. Thanks!

It will depend which model you have. There are some instructions on the Miele website but I found the answer via Google.

Hi OP

Based on your specific criterion I would avoid Miele.

We have had Boschs since forever. About a year ago, our trusty old one gave up the ghost. We have 3 kids/ constant laundry scenario, so DH said, let's invest in the next machine. We bought a 10kg Miele.

The sound drives me CRACKERS. So the actual running noise of the machine is generally smoother and quieter than most machines. But at the end of the cycle there is an incredibly shrill chime and it seems it cannot be turned off or disabled. It is a proper nails on blackboard sound. It starts off irritating enough but recurs every few seconds at increasing volume till the machine is switched off.

It genuinely limits how we use the machine because we cannot have a wash cycle end during any period that we need quiet, such as taking an important call or meeting, my nightly yoga practice, someone napping downstairs etc.

I don't have sensory issues and frequently want to punch the damn thing!

OMG - I can relate completely. It drives me nuts and also means I can’t pop out until the cycle is finished as my neighbours would probably murder me.

i looked this up and apparently there is a way to turn this off but I have not tried yet.

Thanks for this. The programming instructions are hilarious. It's like programming a 1980s video recorder. Happy memories.

Our new Miele did the same but you CAN change it. It took me a while trawling through the manual but I found out how to, and now it just does three beeps. I could have made it silent, but I quite like knowing it’s finished.
