Miele or Bosch washing machine for sound sensitive family

Hi,

I am trying to work out whether to buy a new bosch series 6 or 8 washing machine or a new miele for about a max £1500 budget.

My husband finds the noise of appliances very difficult to live with because of sensory sensitivity to white noise. We spend all our time sitting in the kitchen/dining room where we have the oven, dishwasher and washing machine bashing away all the time.

ChatGPT says the noise of a miele is "more refined" and I wondered if you might have any idea if that is right? They are roughly similar in decibels.

I have a 12 year old miele and it is definitely more quiet than my old series 2 bosch, but I know the current generation may be very different, and the bosch was not very high end.

I'd be glad to know what you think is the easiest to live with noise-wise. We're not think of buying a £3k miele but could stretch to £1500.

Thanks!

I’ve just bought a 6 series Bosch to replace a higher spec but 13 year old Siemens. The Bosch is quieter but I put that down to newer technology, I bought it locally from an independent supplier as they could provide it next day, the guy said to avoid anything over 9kg load as they get more call outs for those that. I looked at Miele but couldn’t see what I would be paying extra for, build quality sounds to have deteriorated, customer services sound useless, I didn’t want a self dosing machine as I’m very particular about detergents.

It does a very short little jingle when it finishes which I find helpful as I can leave my desk to hang it out, reminds me again a minute or too later and then another but I presume I’d be able to disable that.

I know you’re not looking for advice about location but I totally agree with finding a cupboard, bathroom etc for the laundry machines instead but for some reason that’s not feasible.

Just to add - Bosch and Siemens have the same parent company so I’d recommend looking at both.

I’ve just got a brand new 10KG Bosch washer - I think it’s the same model you said you’re interested in - it’s very quiet.

MiniCoopers · 27/05/2026 21:19

We have a BOSCH and the loudest noise it makes is the ‘announcement tune’ it plays when a wash is finished .. god it goes on 😂 Otherwise it’s a great machine

@LethargeMarg We had that knocking noise just before the machine went bang. It went on for a few months. then there was this terrific bang and now the drum is no longer connected to the machine. Something called "The support spider" broke. I like that there is a support spider.

That's what had happened to our old machine. I got sick of the clonking and then the program started to glitch occasionally so I knew it was time to get it replaced before it did go bang and I had to replace in a hurry.

I read somewhere that washing machine warranties are based on being used 3 times a week. Best laugh I ever had.

@NotReallyNotOftenAnywayMiele publish the accoustic rating for the spinning phase. 68 is the lowest I can find and that’s an A rating. I have one and they are quiet but it’s in a laundry room. We don’t sit with it. Their Dishwashers are amazing! Very quiet. The best Bosch I can find is a B rating.

Buscobel · 28/05/2026 10:22

We have a Neff washer/dryer, which came with the house. I don’t find it noisy and it just does a gentle single beep when it finishes.

TheOliveFinch · 28/05/2026 11:39

I’ve had both and not found much difference in noise level , wash cycle was quiet with both but spin is quieter with my current Bosch

RollonSpringplease · 28/05/2026 12:04

I've had both recently and there was no difference.

Edited

Until the dishwasher goes wrong and costs £300+ to fix and has rusty parts and Miele not interested. Won’t buy again as quality is nowhere near as good as it was.

NotReallyNotOftenAnyway · 28/05/2026 12:43

@Fiddlesticks1 This just happened to my car too. It is a BMW and I thought it would last 20 years but it has developed a fuel vapour leak and when I drive it the cabin fills with unburned petrol fumes. I took it to the BMW garage and they said that with £250 an hour labour charges it's not worth my money to have them hunt all over for the vapour leak. It made me think again about the "buy once, buy well" philosophy.

Surely that could have been found the same way as the aircon leak in our old Toyota was @NotReallyNotOftenAnyway - our Toyota dealer couldn't do it but the local garage introduced a tracer into the system and was able to pinpoint where it was coming out again. It ended up being the most expensive component to fix but it helped keep the car going until the rust started to get to it. It's still on the road over 2 years after we gave up on it.

whirlyhead · 28/05/2026 14:26

I had a 20 year old Miele that died and I did not notice it was particularly quiet. My appliance repair man specialises in Mieles and said not to bother buying a new one as the quality has gone down hill (probably true as my 7 year old Miele fridge broke spectacularly after 7 years).

I have no idea how noisy my washing machine is as it lives in an outside utility room which I would recommend if the noise bothers you.

If you have a beeping washing machine there are normally ways of shutting them up - just google the model.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/05/2026 14:33

@whirlyhead I don’t believe Miele have gone downhill at all. For anyone looking for a washing machine and wants a quiet one, they are quieter. The info is available. If it’s in a shed and you don’t care, it’s a bit pointless posting.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/05/2026 14:36

@NotReallyNotOftenAnywayWhy do you think cars of any make last for 20 years with nothing going wrong? Who buys a car and thinks it’s a buy once? What planet are you on? It’s obviously worth nothing much after 20 years! It’s hardly a concourse worthy rare example I’d guess!

Are you here for a chat or a fight?

Ooo, I want a support spider now!

Much better than a dog or a llama or whatever other mammal you can get - no having to take it for walks and pick up poop, or be faced with expensive vet bills. Just wave to it up in the corner of the ceiling feed it a fly once every few weeks.

Chickadee001 · 28/05/2026 15:01

All equally noisy so I think washing dishes in the sink is the way forwards for you!😄

MaisyMary77 · 28/05/2026 16:04

My first Miele washing machine was incredibly quiet. I loved it. I had to replace it a couple of years ago, we spent about £1.3k on a new one. It’s not great! They’ve replaced it once, blamed the floor in my utility room-said it was wood, it’s not, it’s concrete! Blamed pet hair accumulating under the machine, me for loading it wrong…. Fortunately it’s under warranty at the moment but the second it runs out and we need yet another service visit, I’ll be getting a new washing machine.
I have a video of it on spin and moving around my utility room but I’m not sure if I can post it. It’s very, very noisy!

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/05/2026 16:32

@PickAChew Well not a fight but the comments about bmw are simply stupid! Even a Rolls needs maintenance!

A dangerous fault is more than maintenance.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 28/05/2026 17:14

Of course cars can get dangerous faults! Brake pipes leak, power steering fails, tyres blow out etc.

With a washing machine, spend more to get a quiet one,

Cheersminesalargeone · 28/05/2026 17:23

Just got the series 6 Bosh and it’s so quiet I love it!

Definitely give it a go. Google the model number and someting like "turn off beeps".

On ours we had to put the machine in "service mode" to access some of the settings but it worked.

You can definitely turn off the annoying beeps as I hated my Miele washing machine and dryer for the same reason. Someone posted a link up on Mumsnet for me - many name changes ago - and it was life changing! So would highly recommend a Google, sorry that I can’t recall name of website .
Also we have doors built around our washing machine and dryer (stacked in a kitchen cupboard ) and the difference it makes to the noise is really surprising. Worth considering if it might be possible.
