Bio or non bio washing liquid clothes

I was at a friend’s house yesterday and she’d just had an online shop delivered and there was bio liquid detergent there. She asked what I used and I told her (fairy or supermarket non bio). She then told me bio was better for removing stains. I’ve only ever bought non bio as that’s what my mum uses!

So which is better bio or non bio?

I always use bio whether liquid or powder. The enzymes help break down food and other organic stains.

WhitstablePearl · 12/05/2026 18:36

Bio. I have always assumed it’s better at stain, sweat, smell removal

BIWI · 12/05/2026 18:37

It depends how sensitive your skin is, IME. I can't use bio stuff without coming out in an itchy rash.

Nincompoo · 12/05/2026 18:37

Non Bio. Biological washing powder makes me itch.

We have no issues with stains or smells.

AcquadiP · 12/05/2026 18:39

Non bio.

IceStationZebra · 12/05/2026 18:44

Non bio because of sensitive skin, although when washing baby and toddler clothes with many and varied spillages and stains, I used bio for their stuff.

roseymoira · 12/05/2026 18:54

Non bio for clothes, bio for bedsheets and towels

Me too

ClassicalQueen · 12/05/2026 18:55

Non bio unless it’s filthy. I have sensitive skin and don’t want the enzymes all over me.

BigGapMum · 12/05/2026 18:56

Non Bio, as it gets washing cleaner.

Non bio for human related laundry.
Bio for the dog's stuff

Non Bio, as it gets washing cleaner.

In what way does it make the washing cleaner?
Bio has enzymes to help break down food stains whereas non-bio doesnt

beadystar · 12/05/2026 19:10

I use bio because my mum does. I don’t have problems with my skin itching. However, I have to say that I too don’t understand which is ‘better’ or why. The laundry
comes out fine and I pre treat any proper stains with Vanish.

She’s right, bio will be better at removing stains.
I use bio powder, it’s better than liquid.
Some people with sensitive skin tolerate non-bio better though which is why most people use it for washing baby clothes

Mymanyellow · 12/05/2026 20:42

Bio user here too. Better cleaning results I find. I don’t have any issues with sensitive skin , luckily.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 12/05/2026 20:46

Bio advised by a washing machine engineer, especially as we are now encouraged to wash a lower temperatures. It helps keep clothes and the machine clean. Also avoid laundry capsules as they leave a residue buildup inside the machine apparently.

RubieChewsDay · 12/05/2026 20:46

I used non-bio for years thinking it was better for my sensitive skin, but randomly switched to bio because I heard it was better for the washing machine and my skin cleared up 🤷‍♀️

ArcticBells · 12/05/2026 20:48

Non-Bio because it always seems to be cheaper

Bristolandlazy · 12/05/2026 20:50

Non bio everyday and bio if something still smells after washing or has stains etc

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/05/2026 20:50

Bio for whites and pet bedding (not the the same wash...).

Non bio for lights and darks.

Why bio for whites and non bio for darks/lights?
If you wanted to preserve dark colours you'd be better with a detergent for coloured items especially if you use powder.

Non bio and bio powders both contain bleaches and liquids will have optical brighteners unless they are for coloured items

Sprogonthetyne · 12/05/2026 20:56

I've switched to non-bio because one of my kids has sensitive skin and im not organised enoughto do separatewashing, however it definitely does not get stains out as well. Once he's old enough to do his own washing I will be switching back to bio.

Atleastthedoglikesme · 12/05/2026 20:58

Non bio and no fabric conditioner. Sadly every now and again I try and sneak in a bio wash or some conditioner and DH and DS always come out in itchy rashes.

dementedpixie · 12/05/2026 20:59

Sometimes it can be fragrances that cause an issue with skin. @Sprogonthetyne you could try a non bio powder as that would at least have bleaches that would help remove stains. Liquids and pods dont contain bleaches.

I’ve read before (and included a link below) that:

(1) there isn’t evidence that bio is more likely to be irritating than non-bio.

(2) and bio works better to get clothes clean so that’s a good reason to use it.

(3) most other countries don’t even have non-bip detergent widely available.

My children are prone to eczema and one of them found that Lidl bio detergent liquid made his skin itchy. But other brands we’ve tried (the big brands and other supermarket own brands like Sainsburys) have been fine.

The nappy science gang who took on the NHS

It’s best to wash nappies in non-biological detergent, right? Wrong, as a citizen science project discovered when they challenged NHS advice on the subject
