Bio or non bio washing liquid clothes

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/05/2026 17:57

I was at a friend’s house yesterday and she’d just had an online shop delivered and there was bio liquid detergent there. She asked what I used and I told her (fairy or supermarket non bio). She then told me bio was better for removing stains. I’ve only ever bought non bio as that’s what my mum uses!

So which is better bio or non bio?

Bio powder for everything, it's far superior for stain removal. Obviously if anyone had allergies to bio, then that's different.

I'm pretty sure stain removers like Vanish are bio, as they contain enzymes.

Secretseverywhere · 12/05/2026 21:05

I find liquid causes build up in the washing machine. Powder is better, I use non bio as bio causes the youngest dc to come out in a rash.

AlasIsUnderused · 12/05/2026 21:06

Have both: bio for low temp washes, non bio for high temp washes.

Why bio for whites and non bio for darks/lights?
If you wanted to preserve dark colours you'd be better with a detergent for coloured items especially if you use powder.

Non bio and bio powders both contain bleaches and liquids will have optical brighteners unless they are for coloured items

Oh, didn't realise non bio powders contain bleaches; I sometimes use it for sports stuff when I've run out of the dedicated sports wash!

BotterMon · 12/05/2026 21:16

Non bio only as have a septic tank and liquid only as powder contains clay/fillers. All cleaning products are eco-friendly and no bleach.

Pros and cons of bio v non-bio

Sometimes it can be fragrances that cause an issue with skin. @Sprogonthetyne you could try a non bio powder as that would at least have bleaches that would help remove stains. Liquids and pods dont contain bleaches.

Already using power, switched back when the kids were in cloth nappies and 10 years later I haven't gone back.

Bio powder. I like my washing clean.

Tortephant · 12/05/2026 22:34

Neither. Soap is better eve try day, for stains, fabric, environment and wallet

Soap as in body soap, or a special laundry soap? I've never really heard of anyone washing clothes with soap!

managingexpectations · 13/05/2026 00:59

Bio because it works better on stains and smells. I’m a sweaty person and non bio doesn’t quite get rid of sweaty smells in my horrible work uniform
DP was strictly non bio when we got together as he thought anything else irritated his skin but he switched after I’d taken some washing home to try my bio on a stained shirt of his and it came back like new.

Yes just pure traditional soap, as people did laundry before chemicals.

works very effectively and is cheap. I use this:

bio isn’t great for your skin.

Its fine for mine and the rest of my family

IsThatRico · 13/05/2026 08:45

I’ve read before (and included a link below) that:
(1) there isn’t evidence that bio is more likely to be irritating than non-bio.
(2) and bio works better to get clothes clean so that’s a good reason to use it.
(3) most other countries don’t even have non-bip detergent widely available

All of this!
I have non-bio for swimwear and waterproof stuff but bio for everything else.

ExOptimist · 13/05/2026 08:53

Used only Ariel/persil bio for 37 years since I had my first child and discovered how good it was getting rid of baby poo stains on white babygros.

Wynter25 · 13/05/2026 08:54

Non bio

LittleGreenDragons · 13/05/2026 09:02

Always use Bio.

Get your own back at her OP. Tell her powder is far better than liquid or capsules!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/05/2026 09:04

I’m going to try Ecover bio

I use Ariel bio for whites ,
Ariel colour ( which I think is also bio ) for coloured/ darks & fairy for children’s / dog stuff as they have sensitive skin,
I know i have too much time on my hands 😂

I’ve never used bio so I don’t know. I’ve used Biotex powder (when it was available) and if that’s bio then I was fine with that.

I buy whatever is on offer and couldn’t tell you the difference between either!

Edited

Yeah I only have a cat and her stuff is rarely washed apart from when it needs it. Parents have a dog though and if they wash his stuff it’s non bio.

None bio ( bio makes us all itch) but I will soak in oxi if stains before hand.

I was given some of that Smol stuff (the small pouches like ravioli) and gave it to DB and his family. I noticed DB uses Waitrose non bio powder but DB used to get eczema.
